I just got fired. Where should I go climb?

I am currently at a bar in West Yellowstone. I got fired last night and lost my housing and job in Big Sky Montana. I was slaving away for an ungrateful boss up in the Yellowstone Club. I got enough money saved that I can afford a break from work. My wife does not have a job and has been taking care of our 16 month old baby boy. She says I deserve to take a month off. Man I love this gal!

Where should I go? We got a baby who has been going to the crags since he was 2 months old. What is the best spot to go climb with a baby this time of year?

I am willing to bitch about my boss if anyone wants to know.

Thanks mountainproject world. You guys are my reason for waking up every morning... oh yeah and my family.

I agree with mical. Maybe back up plan in 2 weeks if it rains and go to skaha, leavenworth or mazama. Also leave a shit in the toilet and do not flush it before you leave!!

I would line up another job first. Just tell them you can’t start till June. Then go somewhere to climb and maybe she what your wife wants to do since you said she’s been taking care of your kiddo.

My wife wants to go climbing and see new stuff. That is what we love to do together.

We want to get out on the road and check out some beautiful places and climb some solid rocks.

I wanna hear about the boss. What were the grounds for firing?

First off tradiban, I appreciate you and all that you do for the mountainproject community.

I am/was a foreman for framing crews. My boss hired me about 6 months ago and fired his old foreman 2 weeks later; I obviously took a mental note of that. The boss complained that his old foreman never communicated and was just not stoked to be working in Big Sky.

I am an outspoken, outgoing person who loves working on beautiful homes in beautiful places. Perfect fit right?

Over the months I have built close connections with the crew, while my boss is rarely there and he even took a 6 week vacation recently. I ran everything while he was gone.

He decided to join us last week and got stressed out that the inexperienced crew he assembled needs a lot of guidance. (I have talked to him many times about needing better helpers)

He decided to have a 2 hour team meeting Wednesday night and mostly just talked about how bad ass he is and how we should  work faster, much money we are costing the company by taking an extra 15 minute lunch. (He automatically subtracts 30 min from our days for lunch) he also mentioned that we are all expendable and replaceable....

Before and after his rant, I heard the complaints and concerns from the workers and I brought them up to my boss in a professional way. He deflected almost everything, and tried gaslighting me about things the crew said.

The conversation revealed him as a egotistical control freak, but in my opinion the talk went pretty good. I have dealt with many ass holes in my life.

On my way home Thursday, he sent me a text asking what I think I should be getting paid up there. I responded with an answer based off what other foreman get paid in the Yellowstone Club.

He then called me at 10:30 Saturday night and kept trying to walk me into a corner to say I want to quit. (His mind games might work on his wife, but not me.) After telling him multiple times that I am not going to quit, and listening to him talk about how bad ass he is for an hour. He then just fired me...

Since I did not quite I will be receiving a decent sized bonus, so I will be fine for a bit.

Fuck him. At least one employee has quit already since this all went down.

Thanks, it’s always great to meet a new Tradifan.

Yea, I know the type. The “maybe you should quit” line is just blatant manipulation so that they don’t have to pay unemployment, totally unethical, but you obviously know that.

So many jobs in construction out there you shouldn’t have any trouble picking one up wherever you go, perhaps close to a major climbing destination!!??

Godspeed.

Good man lots of climbing and construction. If you end up rolling through Index on way to squamish let me know!

Are you on the road yet? If Boise is on the way, and a logical stop, I can offer you guys dinner/breakfast and an overnight (if no one is allergic to cats). You got a van? Camping? Losing a job is one thing, losing housing is a whole other thing, and a lot tougher to deal with! I assume you have family/friends in Pokey? You guys have a place there, just the job housing you lost?

Best, Helen

Go solo if ya can. After almost 10 years of dealing with slime balls like that I couldn’t do it anymore. Operate and own completely solo now, much much happier. I even thought I hated construction for a while. Nope just my coworkers

Yes we own a house in Pokey. My wife and kid were serious about to move up and live with me in Big Sky this week. It is wild how little he cared.

We just got back to our home in Pocatello. Thanks for the offer! I hope I get to meet you sometime at City Of Rocks.

I know there are tons of jobs in construction. I know i will have no trouble finding a new one. I have a house in SE Idaho and I want to work close to home again.

I want people to tell me where to climb. Stop feeling bad for me and tell me what I want to do. Isn't that what these forums are for?

so many egotistical jerks in the business.  Get insurance and hire out as a sub.  When my boss laid me off I got insurance and hired on as a sub for the same general contractor that we had been working for. the general contractor liked my work and immediately put me on a different project so that I didn't have to deal with the old boss and I got the full wage that My boss had been billing me out at.

I was partners in a business before working in Big Sky. I am having dinner with my previous partner tonight to talk about work.

Replying to the next comment. I reached my daily limit.

Vedawoo, Maple Canyon, Devils Tower, Custer State Park, anything in Colorado.

I’m not a local to any of those places but can say that you won’t be disappointed at any of them. Given the lingering effects of the heavy winter, the lower altitude locales will likely be ‘safer’ bets at this time of the year.

Go to Custer Shaun John, you will dig the little summits and if you get tired of those you can head up to Spearfish for some limestone sport. Hope you are well my friend, if you roll through Yak always have a place for you to post up

Shaun - if you own a house in Pocatello, you may know my in-laws.  My wife grew up in Pocatello, her father was a well-beloved pediatrician and semi-pro photographer, and her mom was first mayor of Pocatello, and later a representative in the Idaho house.   without leaving your home for a month, you have access to the Tetons, Wind Rivers, Sawtooths, Beartooths, Devils Tower (I have connections there), City of Rocks, Lost River range, Wasatch, Zion...  If youre dead set on a road trip, spring climbing in the Cascades is just picking up.  PM me for contact info - for a guest room in Leavenworth.  If you come this way, bring your skis.  Spring backcountry skiing is pretty much at its peak.
