Our kid has been going for it since she could crawl. She did her first boulder at 9 months and has been playing on a rope since she could walk. That said she doesn't do much but she enjoys playing around. She does the auto-belays at the gym but there's honestly not a ton of easy stuff for her age but she loves the Boulder cave and now at almost 3 I think outdoors this summer she'll be more confident. Exposure to us is more important.
We really like the Edelrid Fraggle III harness. In the XXS
my three sons all started climbing shortly after they could walk/run - roped up with swiss-seat tied harnesses @ age 2. mom and I are both retired guides. all three were comfortably climbing 5.10 trad by middle-school, and were leading moderate trad as high-schoolers. started climbing ice in their ski-boots as middle-schoolers, and were climbing WI4 as high-schoolers. our youngest was leading WI4 at age 16. they didn't start belaying us until they were in high-school, and we used the tandem rappel protocol until they learned to manage a rappel on their own, about middle-school age. all are in their thirties now, and climb sporadically, safely and comfortably. none are alpine addicts as I was/am.
Not useful but someone needs to track down the posts/TRs from wayback of this couple that would take their infant multipitch climbing in a standard kid-carrier backpack and spray about. They got flamed hard and disappeared quickly. Wonder how that all turned out…..
Fully intend to pad out my home wall enough that if my kid wants to grab holds, he can do it safely. Safer than lie-backing doorframes above hardwood like i did when i was little

Kids are naturals, if you're having fun doing it they will probably want to join in.
