June 2023 Climbers Over 50 City of Rocks Meet-up

Hello fellow OG Climbers!  My name is Chris.  I have only lurked on the New and Experienced Climbers over 50 forum (often wondering why it's not just called "Climbers over 50").  I have a site and an Escape Campervan and AJ, my leathery old guy partner to join me at COR in June!  We will be in Area 2, Site 002 for June 10-14.

Wondering if you guys recommend a 70m rope?  or will a 60 do?  Do you think i should bring a #4 C4? or can i go doubles up to #3 and be ok?  Do people use tricams here?  TCUs?

See ya'll soon!

I will arrive on June 6th now, with a campsite at Bath rock. 39, starting then, 41 starting a few days later. Dunno just who will be in what site when, but I'll have that old shade canopy with sides on it set up in 39. That site gets cell service if you walk into it a bit, so feel free to stop by, hang out, share whatever.

Looking forward to it!

@Chris, because Lori was a new (yet older) climber when she started these! I'm the other old nooby.

Tricams, a semi crazy friend built a nest of tricams only low anchor at Indian Chief, when he was testing out a Revo (iirc??) as a rope solo device. Of course, that was the same trip that involved another semi crazy friend offering up falls caught on hip belays. It's soooo fun being out with highly experienced badasses!

Re ropes, to all, once again I will have an extra 70 or 2 along, if your party needs one, or wants a 2nd rope for some reason.

I usually have extra everything, camping, climbing, etc, so feel free to hit me up.

Best, Helen

There are some climbs that use 80 m ropes, but you can climb with a tag line if those show up in your to do list. Just be sure to look at the guide before you set off. I’ll be leaving as you arrive, so have a great time! Definitely remember to bring swimsuits for Durfy Hot Springs. It’s a “must do” while you’re there. And if you forget, they do have suits for rent.

Hi Helen! Do you have space for another vehicle at your campsite at Bath Rock? I'm looking for a campsite(s) to share for about a week total around the June 4thish to June 15thish. Any help is appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

Hi Helen, a friend in town has offered to host us so we will not need to share. Thanks for the offer. See you in June!

Does anyone know if there is primitive camping nearby?  I'd like to come, but I'll be solo and don't know anyone...so will I be able to find partners? Thanks!

Yes, there is primitive camping. Also possibility of sharing a site with one of this group. Should not be a problem to find partners if you are there during the meet-up. Hope you can make it!

Thanks!  I will be there June 12 thru sometime after that, I am retired and don't really have a schedule!

Hi all,

FYI, last I checked site F was still available for the same dates that I booked.

I booked site G for June 4th-8th, vacating on the 9th.  It's an RV site up by breadloaves.

I also booked site #53 for the 4th and 5th, vacating on the 6th.  My plan is to stay at #53 (not an RV site, but can park 2 cars) in order to be nearer the folks who will be in the park then (Victor K, Dara, Jill, Brian W.) so we can meet up and such. Hopefully the rangers aren't too picky about me sleeping in my car.  If they are, I'll use site G.  I'll also have a tent just in case.

If anyone has a campsite for the weekend (9th-11th) and is willing to share with me for 1-3 nights, please let me know.  I'd like to stay a couple more days, but if not, I'll continue my journey to the west coast.

My plan is to climb with Jill and Dara and Helen and anybody else that is available.  I'm looking forward to meeting those that are new to me. I was there with the group in Sept 2021.

Mark Webster, have you found a campsite yet?  If not, would 2 nights be helpful to you? Not sure what your vehicle situation will be. Let me know.

Brandt, could you please publish the list of campers and campsites/dates?

Thanks!

Suzy

Thinking of showing up between the 7th and the 30th.  No site needed as I usually stay in the NF but partners I'll need as Cass is actually doing a trip the THE CITY in July.  Does anyone know if Dotty Cross will be back from Mexico during those dates?    Cheers, Budman

@Brandt - Deb and I have site 4 at Smokey Mtn from 6/8-16.

@Bud - Deb's not really a climber so I'll be up for a few routes with you.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

The best news I have is that I'm retiring from HP in two days! After thirty one years in high tech I'm ready!

How illegal is weed in idaho?

The state troopers confiscated a semi with a totally legit load of fiber hemp, a few years back. Hemp is controlled not by Food and Drug feds, but by Dept of Ag. The legislature quickly hustled a bill through to fix that for hemp. An ag product. That give you a clue?

Don't bring your drag queen duds, or, god forbid, be a library employee who checks out books to minors.

Yes, it's embarassing.

Short answer, entirely illegal, but also everywhere anyway. Be discrete.

@Ken, congratulations!!

@budman, when is she there in July? It's just a short trip, but my climbing partner and I are at Castle for the 4th of July! Not my first July jaunt. Hot, but you also still have longish evenings. And a pool!

Best, Helen

Don't insult Kentucky. They passed a medical pot law recently.

@Suzy F, My site is reserved until 6/12, but I have to leave on 6/10. If I’m the only one at my site, your welcome to it. I’ll know more as we get closer to June. It all depends on whether anyone I invite joins me.

@Victor K, Thanks Victor!  I'm flexible, so we'll just see how it goes.

Suzy, I'm still planning on driving the BLM road up to the free camping above Smokey Mountain campground. However, once I'm down there and climbing with you all I'll be happy to help pay for a parking spot if any of you have extra space. I'm in my white 4 WH drive Tundra, same one as the last couple years.

I've just returned from three weeks of climbing at Indian Creek. Got lucky on the weather this time. I went down without a partner but ended up with around 8 new partners and had a blast. The creek crossings were two feet deep this year so my Tundra had up to nine dirtbags piled in some mornings.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
