Ammon McNeely RIP

One of the great characters in American climbing has died. Waiting for more info on what happened.

Rest in peace Pirate man.   The old super taco sometimes feels like a jinx. we lost a ton of folks on that forum.

Incredibly sad news. That man lived life to the fullest and inspired so many. RIP El Cap Pirate.

It's all over social media but details about the incident are scarce. A relative said that Ammon's father described it as a motorcycle accident. This was on Paul Gagner's FB page so the source seems legit.

Not much detail, though article says he fell froma cliff, in an accident unrelated to rock climbing.

Tragic. I was just researching one of his obscurities recently, a 2000 horrendous looking A4+ line east of the Rostrum. He sure will be missed.

I met Ammon out at the looking glass. Was hanging out there for a few days and got bored so I’d aided up the line into the hole up there and when I topped out Ammon was at the top. Dude was fucking stoked and said he’d always thought about doing that line. We got talking about wings of steel and he said “it’s just not that inspiring of a line man. It’s a fucking bullshit line, go do something else that’s better!” After that he base’d off and I saw him a few days later. Said something along the lines of “you wanna beer? I can only have 8 before I jump.” Of course that was right after he talked about dropping his leg off the Muir wall and having somebody bring a parachute so he could get down. Dude was a fuckin badass and an inspiration

Add two and two together and you get drove off cliff on a motorcycle.  Accidental? Thelma and Louise style?  No clue.  Sounds like a fitting way out for the man…..but still 52 is way too soon. Condolences to all those who knew and loved him.

Climbing loses another true original. Sad news.

We are slowly running out of guys like Ammon, and the world is more boring for it...  RIP

An absolutely amazing, kind, generous, legend of a human. The world is a less exciting place without him. Rest in peace Ammon.

Wow! what a tragedy and what a horrible thing for his Girlfriend to have to witness. Love and light to all affected by this. 

All I can think is that it must have been his time, since there were so many others that weren’t his time. The universe works in mysterious ways, though in this case it really pisses me off. Rest in peace El Cap Pirate. You helped make Supertopo the special place it was, and climbing the special sport it was.
