Chulilla Climbing - Beginning of May

Hi All,

Considering taking a trip to Spain this Spring.  We are looking at climbing in Chullila for the first week of May.  I'm getting a tough read on conditions in that area that time of year.  Has anyone climbed in Chulilla that time of year and if so, how was your experience?

Thanks

You could try reaching out to Climb Valencia, a guide in the area. They are very nice as well.

Tough in July not in May really. Spring in Spain is my favourite time of the year for enjoyable climbing.

Hi Giraud,

Thanks for your input, it is much appreciated.  Which areas (in Spain) do you typically enjoy climbing at during Spring?

May is warming up but climbing in the shade is doable. Also crags around the area for that time of year, its not the perfect weather like now. But you can get a week of climbing for sure

Hi Ted,

Thanks a bunch for your input!  Yes, it seems like Chorerras will be a good option.  Any other recommendations on shaded crags for that time of year?

Also, shoot we just booked our Air bnb.  Thank you for the offer tho!

Trad?

Sport? Single, multi pitch, both?

Both?

Type of rock? Please specify: a) granite, limestone and sandstone; b) all of them.

We are looking for sport, single pitch limestone.  However, we definitely would enjoy some good sport granite or sandstone as well.

I forgot dolomite rock. Does this rock suit your climbing needs?

Limestone:

1. Rodellar (Huesca, Aragon region)

2. Siurana (Tarragona, Catalonia/Cataluña)

3. Margalef, right across the valley. You'll kill two birds with one stone. How's that! Pure luxury.

4. Etxauri (Navarra region). Exceptional limestone. A+

Granite:

La Pedriza (Madrid). Like Joshua Tree in the USA but bigger and better. Exceptional rock, ambience/atmosphere and unique climbing style.

There are many sectors in the crag. My favourite is "El Laberinto," but the access is remote. Also "El Hueso" but it hosts some of the most demanding climbs of the entire crag. Try "El Yelmo" sector first as a taste of what climbing is like in there.

Sandstone:

Refer to Siurana. It's a funny crag as it's a mix between limestone and sandstone.

Patones (Madrid). Great crag but out of the question as most of it is closed between Jan 15 & June 15 due to bird nesting restrictions.

I was in Chullila a while ago in September and it was a bit too hot (we still chased the shade and climbed, but it wasn't ideal--lots of mosquitoes, quite humid), so my feeling is that May might be a too warm as well. From my understanding, Chulilla is a really great winter destination. I was in Rodellar in September a couple of years ago and it was a great time to go and a truly fantastic place to visit. I had planned to try and go to Siurana and Margalef on that trip but I had such a good time in Rodellar, I didn't leave. You need a car to get there, but once you park, everything is walkable. I think Siurana and Maralef might be a bit warm for that time of year. I haven't been there yet, but people were telling me they weren't in season yet when I was in Rodellar (again that was in September, but I think conditions might be comparable). Good luck!

Bloody global warming. Things have changed a lot since the 80s & 90s while I lived in Spain. May was a wonderful month to climb. Siurana & Margaret, it was July 1996 when I climbed in those crags: zero heat. Wonderful weather after coming from the cooler Pyreneean climbing.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
