I haven't posted any pics of the Kavern since we finished the walls and flooring. The room is 15 feet by about 14 feet. (The wall on the left is angled with respect to the rest of room, so one end of the room is 12 feet, the opposite end is 16.) Ceiling is 8.5 feet high at the highest, 7.5 feet high under the soffit for the HVAC ducts. Left wall in pic is 5-degree slab, there's 8-feet wide of 30-degree overhang, and 8 feet wide of 45 degree overhang. with 4x8 of roof in between. Everything else is vert, and all ceilings are climbable. Roughly 16 sheets of T-nutted plywood, and over 2500 T-nuts in total. Here's a pic from under the 45-degree overhang. You can see the transition from slab to vert in the far corner. Flooring is a combination of our outdoor crash pads and 4-inch memory foam mattress toppers, topped with carpet-bonded foam. Here's an intermediate pic as we were putting the flooring in. This gives us wall-to-wall coverage, and our crash pads can be retrieved for outdoor trips as needed. I also installed a 2-stage (5-micron to 1-micron) filtration system in the wall/ceiling to filter chalk. (That's just a repurposed shop air filter that I installed ducting for. The rectangular air register in the far end of the ceiling is where the filtered air comes into the room.) In this pic, you can see the intake for the filtration system to the left of thefurnaces. (The white grate that covers the filter is not installed.) These pics were taken shortly after we finished the flooring, and was early in the reset. My sons do most of the setting; we tend to set monochromatic rather than spray-wall. we have a whiteboard in the corner between the furnace and entry door that we use to plan out the set and keep track of intended grades of all problems set. We still need to install doors. There will be double doors closing off the furnaces, and a sliding pocket door for entry into the room. |

Mine is more of a hybrid, but it is a Grasshopper Ninja with extra holes filled with wood holds. Still in progress. Need to make about 14 more pairs of hands and then find good cheap bolt on feet |

12 x 10 with 1 ft kicker at 40. Took me 3 weeks of full time work to figure out how to build it but it was so rewarding. I basically live in this room.

Here's mine. Anchor beam is at 30ft. Only about 5deg angle. I don't use tape anymore to mark holds because it doesn't come off cleanly, so I either memorize problems or use colored chalk. Stainless hardware needs frequent tightening due to changing temp and humidity. Platform at the top makes for good anchor skills training with my boy. |

Just finished making the symmetrical wood set on my Grashopper Ninja. If you live in Reno, I host open board nights at least once a week. Shoot me a message if you want to session. |

John Clarkwrote: Sweet! Can you climb tension board problems on the same board now? |

Prav Cwrote: The wood is homemade, not tension. The Grasshopper layout won’t allow space for the Tension. That would be sweet though |

John Clarkwrote: What type of wood did you use for your holds? Any particular source? Thanks! Working on some to add to our spray wall |

scnwrote: Local hardwood place in reno. I have mesquite, rosewood, maple, walnut, myrtle (lots of this), mahogany, cherry, oak, and a couple ones with weird names I can’t remember. Would grab a couple turning blanks each friday after work |

Chris Hatzaiwrote: Could u post a picture of the back of the wall? Building my own woody soon and really like your build, wanna try and piggyback off of it |

AJ Washkwichwrote: Some hindsight things i would change are reinforcing the top of the board by doubling up my 2x6's on the sides (there is a slight flex to the wood going for the top holds). And if i had the space making it adjustable or just pitching it at 40 degrees in a fixed position. I went 33-34 degrees and after now adjusting to the steep style, i wish it was steeper. The 30 degree range though allows you to still use really bad grips you wouldnt be able to hold on a 40 degree board. Gl! |
