Graffiti on Boulder in Calico Basin

Hi Josh, I would be happy to spend some time out there scrubbing. From the last cleanup, I remember that besides a certain chemical cleaner that was used, there was copious (50-100 Gallons) amounts of water needed to activate and wash away the chemicals and paint.

Know anything about that chemical? My friend has looked a little deeper already and has maybe found a source.

A. is the cleaning chemical required? Or would scrubbing suffice? With or without water?

B. Would the SNCC or someone else have these supplies to lend?

C. I have plenty of time to put towards this over the course of the season to chip away at these. Getting a group together and organizing a "day" seems pretty efficient. But if it's not mandatory to have a group and only 1 or 2 people working together is enough then that's fine by me.

My main takeaway from the last graffiti cleanup was that having enough water on hand / constantly being resupplied from the parking lot was the crux. When we eventually ran out of water because of needing to drive back into town, the cleanup day kinda ended there. If we could make friends with a neighbor in Calico Basin willing to share a garden hose, we could more easily source water. Otherwise, the need to hike it out to the cleanup area is still a cruxy task.

This is mainly why I was starting this subject, I have plenty of free time and on my rest days I would like to give back. These things always go faster when multiple people become involved and if we all chip in we could be quite efficient. I’ve read up a bit on graffiti clean up on the American Access fund and have ordered some of the cleaner that is approved. The biggest obstacle I think will be hauling in enough water to these locations for the clean up. I think meeting and creating a map of all the locations and planning a time for the clean up would help us all. My number is +19853205301 feel free to text if you want to help. I am out of town till Fri, but free when I get back.

Count me in. 856 906 2853. There's a certain famous climber who lives in Calico who would maybe lend us some water?

i wish i could say we didn't see this coming from years away...  you have to wonder if the whole "invite the whole world to enjoy the great outdoors" has been a good idea.  it used to be you would hardly see anybody at kraft, now it is a conga line of folks in leather pants, non-stop instatwattering, tossing cigarettes/handywipes/waterbottles/gumwrappers/etc.  pretty depressing.

In the same area as the OP, along the approach to the Overlook. Head up toward the Fringe from the wash and continue up the vegetated gully instead of heading right to the Fringe. Several smaller tags along the way to these two big ones. I'd love to help, but am out of town this month. Please post if the cleanup happens in February.

This ugly one is right down in the wash below the OP.

I appreciate all the input and I have forwarded the pictures and GPS coordinates to Friends of Red Rock.  It would be helpful if there are more areas for you to post them to Friends of Red Rock directly so that they are aware of them. As far as addressing this personally, being new to the area I have no resources at this time to haul in the water needed to clean these sites appropriately. It would be helpful if anyone had a contact with someone who had sprayers and/or a way to haul in water with an ATV ect. I have contacted the SNCC and this is what their reply was.

Hi Courtney,

Thanks for wanting to help, but yes, as you guessed, the protocols are very important, both for maintaining the environment and the protected hieroglyphs. Also, the environmentally safe supplies tend to be very expensive, so it might not make sense to buy them for one cleanup. We aren't the right people to manage the graffiti removal process and always do graffiti cleanups in conjunction with BLM. I don't think we will be able to do a graffiti cleanup event soon, but Friends of Red Rock host them more regularly, so you may want to reach out to them. You can also reach out to BLM directly. Sorry not to be of more help with this project.

I am awaiting a response from Friends of Red Rock to see what help they can offer and if it would just be more beneficial to have them coordinate a clean up that we can volunteer for.

Hi, Courtney, when you speak with Friends of Red Rock, can you ask them if they are ever going to clean up their Rubby Ducky Tree? It would help them restore their credibility if they actually take responsibility for the mess they have created. If they refuse to act, the tree will die, just like the previous one and another tree will take its place.

Can you provide additional history/context? The description above says it was a mountain biker that first placed a duck.

Please continue posting coordinates and photos of graffiti. We are compiling lists.

So far only 4 coordinates have been posted. You all say there is a lot more. Please share.

The entire ridge of the calcio hills has graffiti along it, I don't have coordinates now, but next time I scramble the ridge I'll get some.

I scrambled the ridge and grabbed these three (how do you attach multiple images to one post?). I know there is more up there, as I've seen in the past, but I seem to take a slightly different way each time up there. The difficulty with these could be carrying the amount of water and equipment needed to clean them way up there. I wish that I could make it on Friday, but cannot.

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the continued posts on locations, I am adding them to the ongoing folder and sending it to the contact I have finally made at the BLM. Just so everyone is aware there is now going to be a "unofficial" clean up every 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month.  No previous experience or sign up needed, just a small form upon arrival. They are concentrating on the Ash Spring area at the moment, and are meeting at the Kraft parking lot at 8 am on these Fridays. Patrick is the BLM coordinator, just show up and they'll give you glove, glasses, and a backpack!

Keep the list going! Hope to see some of you guys out there!
