This is as badass, if not more-so, than the time Patxi saved that gumby dangling on Breakfast Burrito. River Barry, thank you for exemplifying the type of selfless, competent, do-what-needs-to-be-done heroism that climbing is meant to represent for and instill in it's practitioners. Hopefully she gets to sell the story rights for a decent chunk of change, and the inevitable hollywood adaptation isn't completely subjected to "Verical Limit"-esque absurdism. Pretty awesome stuff. |

Hopefully, someone will get River Barry on one of the podcasts (and maybe the BASE jumper as well) so we can get the gritty details… what gear, how was the pro, belayed, or solo, what the anchor looked like, specific pick off technique she used, etc. I’m curious about all of it. Amazing. |

If I imagine myself doing this same rescue, I think I could manage the crack (even if aid was necessary) but I would be worried approaching a desperate base jumper who might grab for my gear (kind of like drowning victims desperately grab rescuers). I wonder if she was able to keep him calm. And get him into a spare harness. And then safely transition him to her anchor. And then rappel with a body that likely weighed far more than she does! I don't own a break bar... does anyone these days? Could you, as a 120lb female, rappel with 180 extra lbs on your body using a tuber or a grigri? |
I assume she just used his BASE jumping harness, they are already designed safely hold a persons weight and have hard points where the chute attaches.
I'm guessing she lead the way up. Once she got him into tied into to the rope or anchor he cut the cords they both got lowered.
Yeah, I want to hear all the details. I wonder how much planning got done before she blasted off. It would be easy to get into a really sticky situation with a desperate rescuee. |
