Anyone find a drone on way up to Hill Billy Rock
|
|
I'm interested if anyone found a Mavic drone on the slopes north of Skunk Canyon and west of the Mesa Trail. Thanks, Bill (bill @ wwwright.com) |

It would be weird if someone lost a drone in that area…..considering it’s against policy to fly them there |

Nothing fills me with more rage than the sound of a drone where I know they are prohibited. |

Klaus theKwrote: Wow, nothing really? With climate change, police brutality, famine, civil unrest, unjust war in the world, school shootings...but for you, drones in no-drone zones are what really fills you with rage, huh? I never understood the intense hatred most climbers direct towards drones. They act like it's literally the end of the world if they see/hear a drone while out climbing. It's a mild annoyance at worst, but they let it ruin their day. BTW, I'm not a drone enthusiast (never owned one and probably never will). |

The sound from them is very annoying to me and most have cameras that are videoing you. |

Do you lack empathy? |

Can’t explain it and don’t understand it, but yup. Drones in National parks and other no drone nature zones = hulk rage. And I even own toy drones built for indoor use. Those don’t bug me. When I am out in the desert listening to canyon wrens and then I hear that buzzing of a drone I start to pre-meditate a dronicide. |

I live for the day when someone flies a drone past me some time and place where shotguns are legal, drones are not, and I have a shotgun. It would almost be worth a misdemeanor for. |

David Awrote: The non stop buzzing of a drone sorta takes away from the ambience of a peaceful crag. but thats just IMO. Keep on keepin on people! Blast those blue tooth speakers! Blow that ciggy smoke in everyones space! Let your dogs off leash! Its all good! |
|
|
Brendan Awrote: That’s so they can clean up human poop. |

According to OSMP, drones are allowed, with a permit, for public land and wildlife management, including research, search and rescue and public safety purposes. |

Rob Kepleywrote: So….. OP, were you involved with any of those uses? |

“Um, yeah. I was totally doing one of those wildlife thingies. That’s why my drone, er, the governments drone is stuck at a local climbing crag “- the OP |

Greg Dwrote: On a road trip my oldest kid had just been potty trained and needs to poop. We pull over in the mountains cuz it’s go time. She lays down a massive teal blue green log thanks to the skittles she had been snacking on for two days straight. The color was amazing. I call my wife over to check it out cuz you gotta see this thing. While I’m distracted Sam the dog sees his opportunity to help us leave no trace. My wife never sees the glorious turd, but Sam the dog has a suspicious grin. |

He very likely could have been helping out with such non-prohibited work. We do lots of wildlife stuff to protect the bats and birds here. Maybe best to know the audience before you go about asking someone to explain themselves. |

Newt Rivermanwrote: Bill is definitely a respected member of the local climbing community. It's likely that the drone was being used for filming the Satan's Minions scrambling races. Whether OSMP cares one way or another about either the drone or Satan's Minions is between OSMP and Bill. Personally I don't like drones. They are noisy, intrusive and serve no useful purpose outside official land management business. |

Lol - some actually useful drone video has been posted from past years allowing one to ‘crowdsource’ the easiest line up popular formations. Those Minions own the Flatirons in the most selfish and scofflaw way during the races - but then an hour or so later they’re done - no money exchanged, small group of local tax payer participants, lots of useful photos and video shared with the community - lots of spectators there to watch - all very different to me than some dufus filming nothing for an Insta nobody follows. |

That sucks, actually. Nothing personal to you intended. What we don't need are drone maps of every inch of every route. This eliminates a fundamental part of rock climbing and reduces it to a gym problem. Drones are the work of the devil, just say no. |
