Nice.
Co incidentally, I saw this photo of you yesterday. Cinema Gully. Did you live out here in the '70's?

I went to college in the Boston area ('66-'69) and lived there after graduating, moved to Oregon with Bruce in '72, back to the Boston area '73-'75, and then to Colorado, where we've lived ever since.

Since I'm locked out from posting again today, I'll add here that I didn't do much technical climbing in the East, and what I did was mostly following easy stuff. But I did a fair amount of hiking, especially in the Whites.

Great.  I believe the caption read '75.

Just a heads up....

City of Rocks reservations for June are opening up now (9 months out). I'm sure I'll be there, various unknown times, but I wasn't planning on reserving for the group this year.

Checking in.  I had Tony drive me back to the ER yesterday.  I just woke up feeling so awful, and couldn't see the benefit of waiting another 3 weeks to finally see a new Primary.  It's been a long time since I had much to do with doctors, so it appears the system is now set up that if you show up at the ER, things can happen fast.  I had an IV, blood work, xrays, other exams within an hour.   I was given a referral to see a Gastro within a week, an Endo within a week, and an Oncologist if he/she deems it necessary after reviewing all my labs.  Otherwise, their earliest bookings were in December.

This was maybe the wrong time to change insurance companies.     But whereas Kaiser in Northern California had 3 major hospitals within a few miles, and every kind of specialist within minutes... the Kaiser here has next to nothing.  Long drives to Riverside (80 miles) or farther to get even the most basic stuff done... Even in a dire emergency it may take '48-72 hours for your doctor to message you back.'  You could wait on hold for hours for an Advice Nurse.  I just needed some action so, Eisenhower is now my group.

Meanwhile, the Flagyl was the hardest drug I've ever taken.... I'm still toxic from it... but it seems to have knocked out the bug.  I'm praying--and maybe that's all it was.

-------------------

I have not seen hide nor hair from Russ here... so maybe this will draw him out.  I bought an Earthing sheet for our bed, and two Earthing mats for our living room sofa.  I'm a big fan of earthing the old fashioned way... go outside barefoot.  But it's been hard lately.  We have goatsheads here that will cure anyone of going barefoot, and the ground is a scorcher. It's too hot to camp outside, so I figured, why not try the earthing sheet?  Can't hurt, could help.

Not that I expected this, but my HRV has improved greatly since the first night we used the grounding sheet.  Every metric has improved.  Go figure.

--------------

In my infirmity Tony and I have watched a ton of TV.  We watched every episode of Friday Night Lights, and it killed me to say goodbye.  We have watched almost every episode of the Wonder Years. Boston Legal.  Breaking Bad.  I forced The Sopranos on Tony... all five seasons, and he watched, but I think that one is too close to home.  We were watching the new season of Better Call Saul,  but I am finding that if a show is depressing, violent or harsh I cannot watch right now.  I just go down with it.  So that also means MSNBC, FOX and CNN are out, too.  Good riddance.

I believe tonight the new Jimmy Chin series starts... and I have not looked closely to see if it is the same series by Alex Honnold of his recent trip to Greenland.  Different titles, but similar.

Tony finally agreed to listen to and watch some old Zep.  After seeing Robert Plant and Jimmy Page do their thing... it was very cool to listen to Plant and Allison Krauss sing together.  Artists maturing.  Even though this is 2007 recording, I'm enjoying it a lot.

And in the meantime, luminaries have been posting here.  Pretty amazing this community and its history.  I'm still hanging onto stories by Guy (of watching someone topple off of Toe Jam and onto a climber on Judas)... of fast drivers careening down Park Avenue, of hijinks among climbers.  I filmed Nelson working on a Bachar boulder problem under Old Woman... but WHOA!!! When I went to look for that boulder problem, look what I found!  A photo by Bob Gaines of Bacher on Spider Line 11d.  I guess I can totally entertain myself!!!

WAIT WAIT!!!  WHERE IS THE ROPE???  Is this for real?

Hey everybody. It’s RUOK day in Australia today. A mental health awareness thing. Bizarre thing is my youngest son got admitted to a mental health ward today. Which made me sad as fuck.
So Cindy, my wife, in her wisdom, suggested I watch videos of me climbing to cheer myself up.
Came across these two light hearted vids.

Hope you are all travelling ok. Lori I’m sorry to hear about your health troubles. Keep your chin up.

Carl, I’m so glad you got your son to a place where he will be safe and can get well. I’m sure he needs to know you and Cindy are there and it sounds like you are a great family that supports  each other. Just stand by him and see the son you know he is and will be.

I got a call from my daughter yesterday that she was just evacuated from her home in Forest Hill due to the mosquito fire which is gaining rapidly and just a few miles away. That would be Erin and her husband and two kids and a farm full of animals all packing up and leaving within an hour. I was up for hours last night just walking it off but I also realized – – it would seem the days of living in a forest in California are over.  Time to get real about this.

Carl - thinking of you and your Son.

Went on dawn patrol yesterday to “Ice Box Canyon” up off of Hwy 2. I think the icebox needs more ice. But it was OK till the sun poked around the corner at 2.

Steep 5.9 … almost pulled my arms off - but in a good way.

We are supposed to get a monsoon… but forecast is backing off on that.

Lori, am so sorry to read that your family is affected by the Mosquito Fire. I agree that Californians need to start adapting better if we are going to continue to live here. The current building codes simply don't work. Time to start rebuilding with steel and concrete rather than wood stick framed houses.

For non-sensational updates on the Mosquito Fire and other fires in California, I highly recommend checking out The Lookout. Zeke Lunder has regular analysis and updates and sensible commentary.  This morning's update:

Carl, it's tough being a parent. Hugs from afar, for all of you. I have 3 guys who are the people I am closest to (other than my son). All of us keep each other going. 2 of those 3 have been inpatient, more than once. Maybe the 3rd too, but not while I've known him.

So, try to remember others "get it", eh? And we care.

The vids were great, thanks!

.....

We went from 100+ yesterday, to a temp of 45 at my house this morning. Had to hunt up some socks. 80s and 70s coming up. Finally. I cannot believe the heat this summer.....

But we are in smoke season now. I don't even know who's smoke it is today, but, smoke from northern CA fires often backs up here. So, Lori, we may be "sharing" fires. My thoughts go out to your family, though. That's tough! We have three separate areas evacuating in Idaho, that I know of. A few structures taken out.

I don't think any of us get a pass on this.

It's finally cool enough to enjoy being outside....and my eyes are stinging, even in the house.

Best, Helen

It was hot, now it's smoky....but there still is this, in September!

These peaches, when they were blossoms? Had snow on them. Bees are amazing! Only one or two girls get out for a brief warm moment....and get the job done!

I THINNED the tree, too! Took off about 2/3 of the peaches and it's still loaded up.

I just wish they weren't all ripe all at once!

Best, Helen

Been kayaking a lot, but finally got a break from the hot and humid and got out yesterday for the first time in over month.  Pretty interesting how taking a month off really affects the mental aspect of leading.  Everything seems harder and not flowing well for the first several climbs.

Climbing partner Paul (some of you have met him) and I got out to play this afternoon, but not climbing. SUPER fun, in a totally little kid silliness joy way! This is up at our local ski area. They have been really trying hard lately, and have a bunch of summer stuff now, too. The Boise Philharmonic happened to be giving a free concert today, too!

https://youtu.be/gIr7Z6OJI7c

Went 6 or 7 times, yelling all the way down. Got to hoot at dudes hauling mtn bikes up, as we passed under the chairlifts!

@Todd.... it's hard to reply to your post. Really nicely made vid, that I enjoyed. The second problem is reminiscent of a hard problem here that's basically down in a hole formed by boulders all around and on top of each other. Needs pads spread out strangely.

And then....your ending. It was very very nice. I just...stopped. There. It's nice to have a pause button, rather than just scrolling through enjoyable stuff. So, thanks.

And sorry about your friend. There aren't any good ways to reply.

Except sorrow.

Helen, I had the same wonderful problem with my figs. After eating too many of them, making a wonderful fig jam with cardamom, and chopping them into salads, I tried a fruit kvass recipe and got hooked!

There are many recipes on the internet. I'll bet it'd  be great with your peaches :)

Rainy boulder hunt turned up this beauty today. — probably  above my pay grade.  Once the state game lands road reopens for deer season, this will entail a 90-second approach.
