Thanks for the feedback everyone! I know it's not for everyone but I've talked to quite a few newer or more casual climbers who have seemed to like the idea. I am definitely building this for newer climbers. That said I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this thread as it's mostly satire but I appreciate the legitimate feedback I've gotten! I'm glad to hear there's nothing wrong with it aside from it's relevance to y'all

It's not wrong because it's irrelevant to us, it's wrong because you're trying to sell a giant 3D-printed spool with an optional tripod to people who don't know any better. I also would think that sounded like a great idea until someone who knew better explained flaking to me.

Aside from giving the problem you tried to solve right back at ya.

A common garbage bag weighs less, costs less, and is 100x more effective (1X for each lack of twist it puts in the rope vs the Rope X )

ironically it is also likely paired up with a Rope X after several uses by the unsuspecting

Yo Jackson, this whole business model of selling subscription "guided rappels" seems a bit shaky... Do you have any guiding credentials (AMGA, PCIA) / Wilderness Medicine certs? If so, none of this is listed on your website... Do you carry liability insurance? What about a Commercial / Conditional Use Permits with the land management agencies whose land you rappel in?

Be careful out there! Access is always a sensitive issue and (for better or for worse) guiding services work as ambassadors of our community!

I second the issue on permit use on public land- I've seen a lot of people try to make some side cash teaching people to climb outside of the gym, only for them to give up once I tell them that profiting off of public land use without a permit is illegal.

Jackson, hopefully you've done your due diligence here and obtained permits for your areas of operation. I say this based on the info on your website and the age of the site.

Someone that can “send it down hundred foot rappels without breaking a sweat” shouldn’t be required to obtain permits.

Its a Utah thing, you'd have to live it to know it

Just checked the website.  Subscription Rappelling.   That’s the most insidious way to prey on vulnerable populations that I’ve ever heard of.

Village of the Damned was based in the UK, so maybe that's a decent frame of reference?

Can you add a motor to the tripod thingy so it can pull ropes and coil at the same time?  Potentially it could belay too

I’d pay a thousand bucks for a belay device that belayed itself. I pull miles and miles of rope through a Gri Gri or Gi Gi every month and my elbows suck now.

Maybe the next generation grigri could be an e-grigri with battery assist

e-grigis are aid.

certainly more aid than a rope twisting hunk of plastic but who knows, maybe this contraption will alter the course of rappelling history?

What kind of grades can you guys repel? I am pretty comfortable repelling 5.9 trying to get comfortable on 10s.

I like that "rappelling history" is a thing - like is there a History of Rappelling museum somewhere I can visit?

If you haven’t seen them, there are plaques in the Curry Village gift shop (next to the junior ranger wear) dedicated to Yosemite rappelling history and the icons of the past - like Brett Benson of SLC

+1 for the e-Gri
