Good buddy of mine. Competent, experienced, and all-around awesome guy.

I won’t post names but suffice it to say this route was well within his ability. He will be missed.

Not to prod too much, but what route was he on? The article doesn’t say. Assuming Otto’s?

It deeply saddens me to repost this information in a matter of weeks - the American Alpine Club’s Climbing Grief Fund has resources that can be found here. If you were involved or familiar with this accident, please consider submitting a report to Accidents in North American Climbing (ANAC). Submissions can be totally anonymous. The main goal of ANAC is to prepare reports of technical climbing accidents in order to educate climbers and help prevent similar accidents in the future. You can email me at westernslope_editor@americanalpineclub.org with any questions.

My heartfelt condolences to all affected.

I also pass along condolences to the family and friends who lost someone they loved. This thread never included any information on how this climber died, from which we all can learn. This fatality occurred due to hitting a ledge in a fall on pitch 1- see link below.  big portions of this route are in ledgy terrain, and many of us will make a choice not to sew up this route because it is easy terrain where you “won’t fall”…  it is super important to keep in mind how quickly things go from fun to fatal in climbing.  particularly on sandy, friable, ledgy terrain.  the last time I climbed this route I came home and told my wife much of the route can feel like a solo- not just the first 50 feet of p4, simply because falling must not happen.  be safe!
