Another mystery old photo of 1919 gizmo
This photo of Albert Ellingwood (left), Barton Hoag, and Eleanor Davis on top of 14,018-foot Pyramid Peak near Aspen, Colorado in 1919, from Stewart Green's writings: What is the thing Barton is holding? |
Maybe a summit register? |
Yeah, likely a tethered summit register tube. Seen some really cool old brass ones that the mazamas put out back in the days |
Or an early Big Bro prototype. ; ) |
Definitely a summit register. I remember one just like it on top the Grand Teton over sixty years ago. Think I have a photo. |
not sure, but one thing i am sure of - albert ellingwood was a mfkn bad ass. |
Eleanor was the badass, IMO! Interestingly both were married to.other people and were not romantic. She climbed for the sake of climbing it would seem. And she lived to be 107! |
Eleanor was definitely super badass, no doubt about it! I bet she had some awesome stories. |
Yes, working on her contributions now. Anyone have any good primary references in books or magazines? She wrote some good trip reports. Working on a piece called, "Trains and Kain" but next post on Ellingwood and Davis will be next on bigwallgear.com, you can sign up for the Substack and get it as email. |

I've been looking for more about her and found a document online entitled A HISTORY OF OUTDOOR RECREATION AT COLORADO COLLEGE – 1874 TO 2011 which was crazy cool to read! |

Thanks John! I'm obsessed at her fierceness and her partnership with Ellingwood. |
