What in climbing are you a snob about?

Metolius used to be the better tape, but sadly in the last year it changed and now sucks.

Climbing, of course, is for everyone. But, if I'm going to watch baseball, I watch the MLB, not fuckin teeball. Same reason I watch the Olympics instead of the special olympics.

If you don't climb harder than 95% of other people (i.e. if you're not actually pro), then you don't deserve a sponsorship and I don't wanna see you unathletic face on ads.

I do not think comparing the special Olympics to the Olympics fully fits your analogy of watching amateur competition vs. professional. I am pretty sure the Special Olympics have never been billed as a stepping stone to the Olympics or a "lower" league of the Olympics. I think there might be a another distinction that separates the two forms of Olympic competition, but I could be wrong.

depends on the kind of bread. I've traveled enough to know there are some reeaaaaaally good slices of bread out there that need nothing...

I'm not a big fan of "influencers" myself, but I do like seeing real people climb things I might actually get on, watching the struggle and the try-hard, comparing their beta to mine, and so on. Unlike most sports, I find the activity of climbing itself totally worth watching. I'm certainly impressed by actual athletes doing 5.22k X routes or whatever, but I can't relate to it on a physical level so it's not as meaningful to watch.

To be fair, I haven't watched any of these sponsored not-athletes. I have watched plenty of YouTube videos of newer climbers fighting Voo offwidths, doing not-too-hard multis and other things I actually do though.

In the rainy part of the PNW, rope bags are great. While the rock might be dry, half the year the base is usually a muddy mess.  A rope bag keeps your rope out of the mud. Plus it's nice to coil the rope quickly onto the bag/tarp and half-ass carry it to a nearby route. Definitely saves time, done 5 or 6 times in a day.

But I can see why a rope bag might seem silly if you're climbing in the desert or at clean dry crags in summer.

The point was clearly: When I consume sports media I want to see athletic spectacle beyond the abilities of average people. Should I have used the NBA and WNBA, instead? Fine. I watch men's basketball because the men can dunk and women can't. Or perhaps: I watch US boy's high school soccer games instead of the USWNT because they're clearly the superior athletes.

i can't tell if you're being facetious or not given that the USWNT has how many titles and medals? i hope so. you're reading like a sexist asshole

I understood the original point, just don't see a lot of anti Special Olympics hot takes on the web these days a bit of an odd thing to rant about, or use in an analogy is all....

Cordalettes are way too heavy and impractical as belts. Chalk bag belts in general are annoying. Carabiners are also too heavy and make the chalk bag sit too low. Buy a chalk bag that fits your harness and use small cable ties to fix it to the rear gear loops, such that it sits higher higher up and level with the harness. Chalk bag is always in the same position that way.

Snob opinions: Climbing 5.12 sport is not impressive at all, and if you think it is you have no clue. Any half-way serious weekend warrior climbs this as a warm up. There's plenty of 50+ year olds who casually onsight these grades. Climbing 13b doesn't make you part of some exclusive club either.

Talking about "projects" that are 5.11 or below while hangboarding or other physical training also makes you sound like an idiot. Go climb more and improve your technique, because you suck at climbing. Unless you're fat, then you should probably also diet.

Cable ties? As in zip ties? If I saw someone's chalk bag was connected to their harness with zip ties, I would judge them even more so than if they were using a carabiner. Having your chalk bag always in the same position is one of the reasons a carabiner is stupid, but at least you can unclip a carabiner if you have to thrutch up some chimney or squeeze into anything. With a cord or belt you can move your chalkboard bag out of the way, I don't get how there's an argument for carabiners (or especially zip ties) vs. a piece of cord or the belt it came with.

It's part of a broader shift in corporate optics and marketing, but honestly, it's fucking annoying.

Back in the day they used models to look like average everyday climbers. Now they use people who actually go rock climbing. I dont think it’s that dramatic of a shift. You just get more targeted ads now, so you see it more.

It's not sexist and it's not even intended to denigrate them. They're clearly very good/the best soccer women players, and would kick my ass on field. But guess what, it's a recorded event that they got smushed by U-15s. They are inferior athletes to 15 year old boys, demonstrably. This is a phenomenon mirrored in many sports (specifically, cycling) But I digress, we weren't really talking about that.  I knew somebody would get their feathers ruffled by this, though.

My original analogy was also not denigrating special needs people. It was just using their quantitatively inferior athletic performances to make the broader point about sports sponsorships and their lesser marketability. Do YOU know who the special needs 100m dash world record holder is? I'd bet not.  I don't. Have you heard of Usain Bolt? Probably. I have. Which one would most people rather watch run a race? Viewership totals indicate Usain Bolt. I would rather watch Usain Bolt, too.

I'm not anti-Special Olympics? What the fuck? I just don't watch them and used them as an example. Jesus christ what a leap of logic.

You sound angry Willy :)

As far as being a snob goes, I just don't get following indoor climbing or climbing comps in general, or speed climbing, climbing in the Olympics,  etc. Is it really actually interesting to watch that? I certainly don't care about climbing as a competitive sport, I really like the adventure aspect of actually climbing, and that needs to be included in climbing media for me. I even think watching pros boulder is boring, I'd much rather read about or watch video of some big wall epic or some sufferfest in the mountains.

I guess now we'll find out how many women and advocates for (and family to) the disabled are following this thread. Out of curiousity, where do you stand on eugenics? Kill them all to feed the strong?

Somehow nobody got mad when I said I didn't wanna watch fatties on unaesthetic V1s. So clearly, fatshaming is cool on MP. Oops, sorry, I forgot. I'm a sexist jerk. What I meant to say was w*men suck and also I hate the eldery and disabled.

Ok well this was fun! I'm off to punch a homeless person and donate to the Westboro Baptist Church! Take care y'all!
