Gunks conditions? Climbable this weekend?

Hey everyone,

I'm a newbie to the east coast and saw that this weekend it's going to be pretty warm in the Gunks.  I was curious if that's reasonable or if it's currently too wet/snowy.  Also would the peregrine falcon closures make it not worth it?  I can't seem to find any definitive information online.

Thanks very much!

TBD on it opening, it's closed at the moment for clean up from the ice storm.  There's still plenty to climb even with the falcon closure.

To echo the above:

  • Right now there are a few inches of snow on the ground up here. It won't interfere with climbing but you'll be approaching through snow and probably a fair number of climbs will be wet from snow melt or have snow on ledges. You'll definitely be able to find something dry though.
  • The falcon closure is big, but there's a ton of stuff outside of the closure and it's definitely worth going.
  • As mentioned above, for the last couple of days the entire Preserve has been closed because of the ice storm. They haven't announced if they'll open for the weekend, but keep an eye on their website and their instagram. They're updating daily.

It's after the Seasons, before the Slime Wall.

Yesterday was really sunny and warm. That should have taken care of most of the 2-3" of sleet that the region got last Friday, on the south-facing aspects anyway.. Wednesday should be another nice one. But after that we stay cloudy and/or cool, so I'd expect some pockets of wetness will stick around for the weekend.

Be careful what you wish for.

Hey Everyone - flying up to NY tomorrow and am looking to climb at the gunks (likely nears) this Friday. Any thoughts on how the conditions will be? It looks like it will be cold, but how dry/climbable will it be after today’s precipitation?

Cheers

Max

Not looking climbable for tomorrow. There's about 4 inches of snow up here now and it's looking to be warmer tomorrow, meaning that the entire cliff may be very wet and sloppy.

So looks like most of the trapps is closed but no closure at the nears or millbrook as far as I can tell. Is that right?

So milbrook is open for public climbing ? I thought  it was only fir guided climbing.

I think you are thinking of Skytop.

I agree that "closed except for guided" sounds like Skytop.  But if you (curvenut) are thinking about Millbrook make sure you know what you're in for in terms of (legal) access, approaches, descents and just overall more complexity and seriousness (as compared to the Uberfall area - which is still open).
