Caves in Fairfield (Sinks Canyon)

I’ve been curious about a couple of caves I’ve seen up on Fairfield.  Been thinking about exploring a bit. Before I did, I thought I’d just check in case responses might make me more cautious, like…

“Yeah, don’t go in that cave- Old Matilda the cougar has been living in there for years. She don’t like company”

or

“You ever played Mario?- that one drops straight down to a lava field.”

I know I’m a little silly on that, but I’m smart enough to look before I leap. If you’ve got any warnings besides the obvious ones, holler back :)

I've hiked up to check out some of the caves visible above the gully that separates Sinks Main Wall from the Fairfield Hill cliffs.

I found a few bones that may indicate mountain lion activity (could also have been packrats, maybe). Consider bringing bear spray.

The rock in the caves didn't seem particularly good for climbing; I believe it's Madison Limestone up there, instead of the Bighorn dolomite which forms the main cliff band in Sinks which is generally excellent for climbing. No pockets to speak of, just blocky edges/features.

Let me know if you find any caves that go far/deep underground (like, far enough you need a headlamp). That's what I was looking for.

Let me know if you want more pictures or other info.

Awesome picture. The one one I almost got to in the Wilds was a sketchy jaunt. To get to it I’d need a couple pieces of trad gear and another willing explorer to belay.

Another was in the Fairfield wall. I made it to that one a while back. 2 small rooms. Didn’t explore much due to a batch of the heebie-jeebies (alone 40 feet above death smelling delicious to unknown creatures).

Holler if you’re game to poke around up there :)

Best,

Phil

I'm not in Lander right now but will be this summer. If you're around Lander this summer let's go exploring.

Sounds good- I live here, so just holler when you’re around. Love to see more pictures if you got ‘em
