The Summit of the Gods

Since there's a couple climbing film threads going, I'll add this one. It's currently on Netflix. This is different from all the others. For starters, it's animated. Adapted from Manga, and fictional. But the really interesting aspect? It is very well done. You might find yourself drawn in deep, and following it as a documentary. In fact, I looked it up, as I thought it was an unusually formatted documentary. Good story, beautifully done! Enjoy! Oh, and remember to set it to English, eh? Unless you wanna practice your French.... EDIT to add, the spoken English version is well dubbed, unlike the really clunky dubbing on Squid Game. Best, Helen |

This looks… interesting. A bit over the top with the vertical-limit crevasse jump and outrunning an avalanche, but I suppose that’s expected from a comic adaptation. |

Damn that looks pretty cool. I'll be checking it out. Thanks for the rec! |

I really enjoyed this movie. I think trailer over dramatic compared to what happens in the movie. Would definitely recommend just for how pretty the art is. |

kevin really likes telling people he doesn't like movies |

T Legowrote: Yeah most climbing movies are boring and cartoon ones, esp. ones with poor animation are bad. I like movies even some with gratuitous nudity and body counts. |

Kevinmurraywrote: Except this one is exceptionally good. I don't care for animated at all, and this one I liked. Don't go by the teaser, that's a terrible clip selection. The mountain scenes? I think they started with high quality photos, and just barely converted it into artwork. It's quite nice. Give it a try....or not. Sheesh. Best, Helen EDIT to add, for full disclosure in the gratuitous violence and nudity department? I watched Game of Thrones, lol! Although I kept getting sidetracked, thinking how much fun it must have been to film! |

Watched it tonight. Very good. |

I liked this movie very much. It's slow, it's deliberate and the artwork is stunning! |

This was soooo good! Beautiful animation and composition, great story, and the climbing holds up. |

Andy Forquerwrote: Yeah, the climbing details were there. Did you notice a swami belt (or webbing, not sure. No leg loops) in the flashback? I thought they blew it, then realized my mistake! Best, Helen |

I was impressed by the period correct climbing gear. The equipment was appropriate for the various decades that the movie represents. I also felt like the animators captured the feel of the climbing situations they depicted. The topography on the Grande Jorasses and the views from the face were accurate enough to make me think that they must have used photographic templates for those scenes. |

Absolutely loved this film. Beautifully done and excellent exploration of an interesting aspect of mountaineering culture/psyche, with great tie-in to the Mallory/Irvine mystery. |

This exceeded my expectations. I must admit to feeling a little averse, and the preview certainly did not help. But I ended up enjoying this quite a lot. Beautiful animation, and a really good tone and pace for exploring the terrain they did. Thanks for sharing, I might not have approached this otherwise. |

All, I just ordered the english language manga, volume 1. I'll post some pics when it gets here! It will be interesting to see how the original print version compares. Although, an english translation could change the looks considerably from the first editions (now heaps of money, btw). Glad people are finding this, it really is worth watching! Best, Helen |
