Georgia climbing missions?
|
Hey everyone, I am looking for some advice on climbing (sport/bouldering) in the Georgia region. I'm originally from Georgia but live in South Africa now, and don't know the local climbing areas or fellow climbers. This is a bit problematic as I'm flying back in December for the holidays, and will be in desperate need of some rock. Can you guys point me in the right direction of meeting up with fellow climbers and potentially the best spots to consider? I'll be staying with family in the Savannah and Elberton region. Thanks for reading! |

Good luck trying to find anything within 3 hours of Savannah. Elberton is 30 minutes away from Shaking Rock, and less than two hours from Big Mountain Rock, SC and Yonah Mountain. None of these areas are ideal climbing destinations, but they will scratch your itch for some real rock. At the bottom of the mountain project homepage there is a map of climbing destinations if you want to explore further. |

Stone Summit climbing gym in Atlanta is a place you could connect with folks. I say the best sport/bouldering depends on what grades you are looking for. Stone Fort in TN, Rocktown in GA, and Horse Pens 40 in AL are the best spots for concentration, variety, and quality for bouldering. Foster Falls TN is probably the best sport spot for variety of grades and concentration of routes. I hope you are willing to drive a bit though, nothing closer to savannah other than boat rock boulders in Atlanta (~4hrs).

Big rock SC is the best semi close out door climbing. and super warm as long as it’s sunny |

Noodle Dude, thank you for the response and info. I'll have to look them up and make a plan to visit then. I'm hoping to find a place to rent bouldering pads. That's a really good point regarding the grades. I typically tackle problems in the equivalent range of v3 - v5 (maybe v6). Sport climbing is probably around 5.8 - 5.10d. I was thinking of Rocktown actually, but I'll have to take a look at the other two you mentioned. I'd be super keen to check out Foster Falls but that'll require a climbing partner. Definitely expecting/planning on having to drive up to these spots. I'll just have to sort out an Airbnb or find a campsite for the slightly longer drives. You are right about that, however, that's what makes them so special. Rocklands definitely has spoiled me lol. I am really looking forward to checking out my local southern roots. I've never climbed in Boven, hope to do that in the new year perhaps. Also, thanks Ezra for your comment. I'm gonna keep Big Rock in mind for a potential short trip. |
