Linville , Stone Mountain Winter weather

What's the weather norm for late December and Early Jan? I'm coming from Pennsylvania. Possibly planning a trip between Xmas and New years. |

Joseph Raywrote: The weather can be very different between Stone and Linville but if it's on the cold side Stone is great as long as the sun is out. I've climbed there with highs in the mid 30s and snow on the ground and been comfortable. If we get a warm spell Linville might be OK but access can be an issue because of road closures depending on where you want to go. |

Emil Briggswrote: That's right I forgot about the road closure. I was down there about 2 years ago in OCT and I was rained out. |

A fitting end to a bear hunter. Good riddance. |

Shortoff gets the most sun, is at the lowest elevation, and is the most "winter-friendly" of any crag in the Linville gorge. The Amphitheater has routes that get sun such as the Prow, parts of the mummy/daddy buttress. Stone mountain can be downright hot in the winter if the sun is out. Sauratown open December through March and faces due south. Rumbling bald is also a good winter crag. It tends to get less precipitation than other areas. You may get great weather or you may get skunked at that time of year. Just wait and see what the weather forecast is! |
