Inner dialogue when trad leading
|

what goes through your mind when your gripped or pushing your comfort zone? How do you stop yourself from over thinking? |
|
|
Usually when I’m overthinking, I’m also under-breathing. A few focused breaths can do a world of good. |

Willow Maewrote: You just climb, know that you had a reasons to be on the route, know that you probably wouldn’t be on it if you didn’t think you could lead it, just send, if you fall it’s is probably no the end of the world |

A few days ago I was on a longer-than-expected runout (like 50+ feet) and the lyrics of the Beatles "Let It Be" started playing in my head. Specifically, "When I find myself in times of trouble..." |

I think of something Royal Robbins said at a slide show I saw, "there's a fine line between falling and letting go." |

I tend to vacillate between humming, wondering about the future, and swearing. Father forgive me for I .... |

If I'm in panic mode or approaching it, I already failed. I plan to be a bit amped up in relation to the risk I am taking, but the whole thing is like an act of meditation, whether it's a pitch or a mountain. If I am pushing my comfort zone, it is because I planned to, so I feel ready and I don't really need to think, other than to observe and plan check in points to commit to the risk. If things aren't right, I bail while I still have the wherewithal to do so safely. So when I find myself feeling gripped, but still climbing on, I relax and know I'm ok because ultimately I can trust and live with the decision I made to be there. |

|
I try to divert myself into other positive thoughts. Examples: Why do I even do this sport? I hate this. Why couldn't my partner lead this pitch? I really need to take a leak. Maybe if I just untied from the rope, everything would be OK. That party over there is on a harder route, but they look like they're having fun. Assholes. |

Singing. When I'm cruxing or scared (usually the same thing) I often find myself singing. It helps me stay calm and forces me to breathe. |
