I can't find the forest service order saying that and the article doesn't reference it. All i can find online is https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd945702.pdf which doesn't include Inyo and some others

I don't see it on USFS site yet. I cannot imaging what it would be like trying to enforce it on Labor Day weekend.

Anybody have an idea for what that means for the Tuolumne bivy?

Conditions are explosive and people here on Sonora Pass are really concerned. Especially watching what's going on on Highway 50. One spark by one idiot is all it will take.

The order means that I can't climb (or hike or even enter) on the forest where I live. But since it should also keep hordes of people away who aren't as fire-aware as I'd like to see? I'll take it. Gladly.

This spring I cut still more trees down, making 30 and 40 foot gaps and pole sawing everything to 20 feet off the ground. But in conditions like this? If it gets going we'll lose it all.

If you click on a user profile there is an ignore feature. Makes MP a lot more useful.

Burning houses set trees on fire not the other way around according to todays Sacramento Bee article about the Lake Tahoe Angora Fire . Fireproofing  all the structures & insurance problems are going to dramatically change rural California.

Every local in Tahoe blames TRPA for the angora fire which was set by a homeless person camping illegally.

David, I had to search to find that means Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. Can you write a bit more about how/why they are blamed for the Angora Fire? Would like more info to understand. Thanks!

TBH, a good call from the FS but it was too last minute.

I feel bad for those who got permits 6 months ago to do something epic like Mount Whitney. Got the time off, plane tickets, etc. One week before their flight, after all of their preparation, the forest is closed.

Time to go into the forest in disguise.

The fact that we have so many idiots that can't manage to go into the forest without igniting it... Probably the lamest part.

This. We either need less idiots, or we just have to accept the fallout these idiots cause us all. Unfortunately, the entire country is a breeding ground of idiots, from the totally clueless, to those who defend their idiotic behavior under the guise of "freedom" and that everyone should just "mind their own business". It's a really sad state we're in.

I would have closed them a month earlier, if I had a Magic Governor wand.

I think at a given drought / soil aridity level, a given national forest is closed. This should be a procedural tool available to any national forest management team, too. Likely, quite a few forests should be closed for summer in any drought year.

I think we are going to have to get used to it.

I doubt anyone will be making california trip plans in august or september from now on. Too risky.

Does anyone have an informative source on why wild fires have been so heinous the last couple years? People throw out forest management and climate change, but is anything significantly different than say the drought years 2012-2016? I don't remember the fires being this bad then, but also I was younger and didn't live on the Eastside so maybe I just didn't pay attention. When people say clean the forest and forest management etc is it realistic to have controlled burns 20+ miles from a trailhead?

Yes it is realistic - take a drive down 120 and look at the piles the loggers have made out here, miles from forest service roads or trailheads….In all reality these guys can cut Ned forest service roads to access hard to reach places. And to think we had the rim fire 5 years ago in the area and they are still stacking massive piles of fuels that never were burnt or logged….

In addition to the drought it has also been much hotter than normal.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
