Shawn Snyder talks on HowNOTtoHIGHLINE

“Where are the dead bodies Shawn? That’s not the point this is a majestic area.” |

I can agree with Shawns overarching points but the way he gets there and his reaction to things not going his way is a nightmare. We should be doing better when replacing bolts and there probably should be some type of system to show that people know what they are doing, but defacing classic areas does the exact opposite of that. Its a huge swing and a miss for getting the point across, and the torch statement at the end was a big turnoff as well; who died and made you king of the choss? |

I really despise the attitude of entitlement some people have. Obviously we need to hold ourselves to a high quality standard while placing fixed hardware as a community, no one is going to argue with that. At least this was a civil conversation but I think Shawn really showed us who he is. |

Some would argue that giving Shawn any sort of platform is a bad idea, but I give props to Ryan for trying to find some common ground and to hear each other out. But it ended up being mostly a pointless exercise since for Shawn, there is no middle ground. It's either his way or burn it all down, which helps no one. |

I understand and appreciate his passion, but his actions toward that end are completely inconsistent. It's good to give people space to talk though. |

This dude is on a sick one |

"I'm the only one left!" |

I was a little sad that no one asked the question, "What up with all the crappy via ferrata" And, "how does that fit into your idealized way on how things should be done, based on how you personally do things" Like I get Jim Beyer's POV since he sees himself as this anti-capitalist anarchist and even though I don't align quite with his POV, I at least can understand it and seems sort of consistent. |

Both characters made me cringe. Sean Snyder has a punchable face. Using language like “I deserve” makes you lose credibility |

A switch to decaf might be in order ,seems barely in control of his faculties , some very bizarre body language,( throwing sand and getting weirdly "touchy" at one point).Dude is a hot mess. |

Shawn is the embodiment of every 50+ year old "old timer" with an ego in the climbing community. They think they hold all of the answers, and no one else could gain the knowledge from other people or through experiences of their own. They're usually angry, bitter, and sadly unoriginal. They're like every high-school bully ever, who has some deep rooted issues behind the scenes and need someone to take their unhappiness out on. Standing up to bullies is not easy, but it needs to be done. I have to say that Ryan could have at minimum tried to stand up against what Shawn has done in the real world, but he opted for the easy path and just got rolled over. The fact that Shawn wasn't confronted about Smith, from anyone in Ryan's crew, is pretty sad. Bullies only have power when they are allowed to run around doing anything they want without being confronted. This was a huge missed opportunity, in my mind. |

Matthew Jaggerswrote: I disagree. He has mental illness, which is different than just ego and an “attitude”. |

Terry Ewrote: Says a lot about the egomaniacs that 'don't' have a mental illness that sound just like him when other people have a different method or way of doing things. |

Mike Climbersonwrote: I've seen some of the HotNottoHighline videos on youtube and thought they were interesting, but it does get boring after a while watching stuff break. I don't get how anyone could see this debate as anything near balanced. As I understand, Ryan has done a lot of work replacing and repairing bolts where Shawn Snyder is just a vandal with possible mental health issues. Why the hate toward Ryan? It seems really out of place in this context. |

Astrid Reywrote: I think people see Ryan as an obnoxious youtuber and not really a climber, more of a slackliner. |

Astrid Reywrote: Shawn has placed and replaced hundreds of bolts over the years and certainly knows his stuff. I would venture to guess he has replaced 5x the number of bolts Ryan has? It seems that semi recently (7ish years ago?) He started going off the deep end which has lead to his current day infamy. When Ryan first replaced the bolts of the lost arrow spire there was a perception that he did not do a great job, not from everyone but from a not small contingent. Ryan has since become significantly better and has created one of the better (best?) modern bolting information resources. Ryan is also perceived as annoying by some and sometimes people don't agree with what exactly he wants to bolt. Most of that has died off considering that Ryan has significantly backed off of his bolt everything attitude from when he first started. There is plenty more history behind both of these two, but this is the super broad brush stroke summary. |

Levi Xwrote: What was the specific critique of the Lost Arrow rebolting? I've just seen the video and haven't been up there, so I don't have the full context. But from the video the "before" looked like a mess of bolts everywhere, while the "after" looked nicely cleaned up. Looked like a big improvement. Did they not like the technical manner in which he placed bolts, or handled the old holes left behind? Or is it just general territorial concerns - they didn't like that Jenks had touched "their" bolts on "their" turf? |

JCMwrote: Based on my limited understanding of the situation I believe that the issue was that the old bolts were not fully removed. There may have also been an issue with the epoxy. As far as territory I cant really speak to it. |
