Funny, because out here I rarely see humans, let alone vapers and cursing hordes. Also, out here, when things get a bit sketchy we drill a bolt. Maybe your issue isn't the dangers of rock climbing but the society and ethics you choose to live with. But hey, maybe now you can home school your kids to train them to be Olympic Wrestlers, like we discussed in your previous kid thread. Wrestling is totally safe.

Mark Pilatewrote:I agree with Tradiban. Climbing is horrible for kids. Basically a life threatening cesspool of drugs and poor behavior. Get enough of that at work and school. Sailing is the safe, clean, environmentally friendly alternative. Switch now.
Isn’t that a cute picture of privilege.

Christopher Smithwrote:You definitely hit on one of my frustrations with climbing outside. I quit smoking pot for a myriad of reasons about a year and a half ago and it's tough with the amount of people (especially in and near CO) that are chiefing it up. I can fully understand where that would be doubly worrisome for a parent. I will admit I do drink at the crag though but it's generally no more than one lower alcohol percentage drink and usually after doing a MP while taking a breather. Also trying to get better on the language part, especially around kids which I have been terrible about in the past. I'm finding going out and climbing with mostly other Catholics helps with this a bit certainly but the general culture in climbing is kinda trashy. Totally. I recently started my own church because even the regular faithful crowd was becoming too rowdy. Daniel Chode Riderwrote:Didn't know you had kids. Little Tradibans, running amuck. Cute. 5 of them, one 10yr, two 9yr, and two 6 months old (unborn). Victor K wrote: Funny. I started when I was middle-aged, and my only thought was how much I would have liked having both gym and outside climbing when I was young. I look at the culture of the sport and my reaction is exactly the opposite. I expect you'll lead by example, and give up climbing? Because "do as I say, not as I do" isn't really a winning formula.
I will continue to climb outside, we have simply deemed rock climbing an "adult activity" Jon Rhoderickwrote:I know I’ve already asked you this but: Have your children considered adoption? Your missing the most important reason. I assume you have life insurance. Kids realize this. They drop you. They get big pay day and can now climb as much as they want without adult interfering. You should also maybe not climb with your spouse, I know mine has mentioned how nice it would be to stop belaying me and the payout.

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be climbers Climbers ain't easy to love And they're harder to hold They'd rather give you chalk Than diamonds or gold Chouinard harnesses and old faded Gramiccis And each night begins a new day If you don't understand them and they don't die young They'll probably just climb away
Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be climbers Don't let 'em camp or hike them old hills Let 'em be doctors and lawyers and such Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be climbers 'Cause they'll never stay home and they're always alone Even with someone they love
Climbers like smoky fires And clear mountain mornings Patagonia fuzzies and Chacos And guitar tunes into the night Them that don't know climbers Won't like them and them that do Sometimes won't know how to take them They ain't so stinky, they're just different But their mind won't let them Live life that you think is right Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be climbers Don't let 'em camp or hike them old hills Let 'em be doctors and lawyers and such Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be climbers 'Cause they'll never stay home and they're always alone Even with someone they love

This is a common theme for jokes on MP but really, it's not that funny.

All will hopefully follow the family tradition of service to their country and their fellow Americans (ALL Americans) in some way. “Iron Mike” was a theme over the weekend and “he” is one of their examples to strive to emulate (all versions… look it up if unfamiliar, there is a much copied original “version” at the the UofMN) In essence, we’re raising them to be the exact opposite of Donald Trump… who doesn’t climb or sail. ;) And, to get more serious on a troll thread, the best thing about climbing is teaching kids the mental and physical competence and confidence needed to deal with dangerous things calmly and intelligently. Wusses never prosper

Wusses never prosper I couldn't agree with you more Mark, my kids are still young (5 and 3) but they both love the mountains and being with Dad when he is climbing (ie bouldering with them, still too young to take my oldest son to the crag yet). I can't wait to get into climbing adventures with my kids, should they choose to pursue the sport. Learning to fight through challenges and adversity at a young age has served me well in my life, and I hope I can provide the same lessons to my kids.
