I will be in Flagstaff June 23 - 26th checking the area out. Hoping to get schedules to align and get some routes in at the gym or outside. I have been climbing since 2009, am WFR certified, have taken high angle terrain rope rescue classes, and am safe and competent. I have plenty of trad and sports gear, and rope, and can bring some or all on my flight, depending. I can lead or follow, and like long multi pitch routes but am up for other routes too, preferring vert routes, cracks, and thin faces. Mostly just looking to see what Flagstaff has to offer! I am vaccinated against COVID.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the Coconino and Kaibab Forests put total closures in effect this morning for the foreseeable future. This means almost all climbing within an hour of Flagstaff will be inaccessible for quite awhile.

Thank you for shouldering the burden of bearing this bad news. I saw the closures and suspected this was the case. My knowledge of the area's geography is quite poor but from what I could make out on maps there are no options. Any suggestions or am I just outta luck this time?

The closest options to Flagstaff I can think of would be Sullivan's Canyon, The Promised Land, The Dells, and Winslow Wall. They're all a bit over an hour from Flagstaff. Also they are all a bit lower in elevation so they'll be a bit hotter but they have shady walls. Winslow Wall is sandstone and it sounds like it might have rained a bit in Winslow today so it's best to give it time to dry. Lastly Sullivan's Canyon, The Promised Land, and Winslow Wall are all on State Trust Land so you need a permit to legally go there. You can get them for cheap off the AZ State Land Trust website.

Thank you Jacob. This is super informative. I am flying out Fri afternoon instead of Sunday due to the fires. I will walk through the gym to at least get a sense of what that looks like.
