TRANGO

RECALL NOTICE

#1 MaxCam

Batch Numbers: 0605, 0705
27 March 2006

After receiving a defective unit from a climber in the field, in-house inspection and testing has revealed that a small number of our # 1 MaxCams have head axle rivets that do not meet the minimum specified diameter, possibly resulting in failure of the cam assembly. This flaw affects only the red #1 MaxCam with Batch Numbers 0605 and 0705 that were sold in 2005 and 2006. All other cams are unaffected and you can continue to use them with confidence.

Please discontinue the use of #1 MaxCams from Batch Numbers 0605 and 0705 from use immediately and return them according to the instructions below. We highly recommend that you use UPS or FedEx so that you have a tracking number.

Via UPS/FedEx or other package service:

TMI/Trango
Freeport Center F-11
Clearfield, UT 84016

Via US Mail (USPS)

TMI/Trango
PO Box 160470
Clearfield, UT 84016

We will inspect and repair or replace your MaxCams within three business days and return them to you. Mark each cam with a return address, a phone number and an email where we can reach you if we have questions.

We are truly sorry for any inconvenience. Please call us at 800/860-3653 or visit our website at trango.com if you have any further questions.

yep, gonna zombie this one. since i stopped climbing for quite a while back around when this happened, i never saw the recall. im just going over my gear again last night to get ready to start climbing again, and saw the 6 #1 max cams i bought around that time. wouldnt ya know, all 6 are from one or the other bad batches.

my question is, why is it almost impossible to get in contact with anyone at trango? no one answers phones.....

well, malcom isn't with trango anymore, but if he still was i can pretty much guarantee that EFS would have 6 new cams coming in the mail.  not sure what trango is like these days, as i haven't purchased any trango items in a while.

what ever happened with this innovative design?  I was looking forward to trying one out, anyone have one they want to sell?

They were a pain to place and never caught on.

Disagree. the one max cam that I jhad (I think yellow size?) was just as easy to place as any other cam and didn't require any extra consideration (like a link cam). They did have a  weird failure mode in parallel cracks where their lobes would flop over when the stem is wiggled (i.e. walking due to rope action) but that didn't have an effect upon how to place them, just how they worked after they were placed.

I have a full set of these for over 10 years. Their range is fantastic. However I never felt confident on placing these, as they walk way to easily and may flop over as mentioned. I do not use them any longer for anything rather than playing in super easy routes or hanging my hammock =)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
