Anal impalement got these people losing their minds.

Sorry for Brandon, that’s not a reality any of us want. Swift recovery!

Agree with the HIPAA violation.

I'm a nurse who has worked in administration and closely with HR for many years. Jeff, trust me, your hospital has a policy forbidding what you have done in this thread. Please, for your sake, delete those posts. Anyone who quoted it please take it down too so Jeff doesn't lose his job.

(The fact that that post was even made makes me suspect this is a troll as HIPAA compliance training is a yearly requirement and all nurses should know this.)

How is this a HIPAA violation? The only person posting personal/medical information is the patient. The nurse merely confirmed what the patient already made public. Not sure if that is a violation or not. Hospital policy…now that’s a different question.

Still calling troll...why are so many buying this BS?

There’s part of me that likes to believe that people wouldn’t troll on the subject of gruesome injuries and accidents. If it is an elaborate multi-person troll, then it’s not brilliant, it’s pathetic.

But also, think of it this way:

A) it’s a troll, and I believed it. Which caused a group of troll buddies to roar in laughter at my gullibility. I let people have a laugh… meh  even if they think it’s a laugh at my expense, it really doesn’t hurt me;

B) it’s not a troll, but I chose to disbelieve and mock the injured person who might be in a much more fragile emotional state after the accident than I am, sitting here idly looking at my phone.

I would choose A over B every time. Let people laugh at my belief in decency, vs dismissing/laughing at someone’s injuries… yep, not that hard a choice, for me

Pic shows his face, a bloody wound drain, a catheter and fresh dressing, all about where you’d expect for a pole in the ass - so there’s that part of the story that jives.  Lol - 70+% idiotic reaponses here - seems a little rich, even for MP.

Lena hit the nail on the head.  It’s really not “gullibility” if multiple people with pics are determined to troll. (If so, 9.8/10 ,  docked  0.2 for going anal)

But alternative is vulnerable, drug infused person early in traumatic aftermath of horrendous injury.  Go easy.
best wishes on full recovery.

Where’s the Rock and Ice when you need them most to confirm a story? I’m so confused!

The only part that’s hard to swallow in this story is any gym using a DIY “fence “ to close off an area while route setting. Using 2” PVC pipe in a climbing gym as fence posts would be like using steel beams to mark off a road repair area, hazardous to say the least.

Maybe Trevor or Tradiban could call and confirm?

I worked for touchstone climbing for 10 years. One of the biggest climbing gym companies in the world. this is standard practice.

A PVC pole for posts, plate weights for base, and plastic orange netting to cordon off.

Interesting. I do find that weird. All gyms I've noticed used something construction orange cones or similar, with or w/o actual cordon/netting.

I mean it's not like that thing needs is supposed to be able to withstand Trump supporters at the Capitol (boom-tsk). It's basically just there to signal that the area is off limit. Lots of hardware seems at best overkill, and I guess with that accident also dangerous.

The wall it off cause kids and what not running around. Without the physical net; those little whipper snappers (and oblivious adults) can run under setters.... and they are known to sometimes drop holds and bolts etc from time to time.

Yeah for sure - I maybe those gyms not using a beefier system will eventually have issues with some 3 yo that received a 6" screw on the head and suffered trauma. I guess in the big scheme of things, both accidents are pretty unlikely (e.g. if it's just the random kid/person passing undernearth once or twice, you'd have to be pretty unlucky to happen to be there exactly where & when the setter drops something big enough to matter, and I've never heard of impalement at the gym before either).

Guys cool it with the "fake comments". I'm Brandon's half brother and I was unfortunately standing next to the pole when he fell, I'm currently lodged in his ass awaiting a surgical extraction.

Thanks to all the gym staff and medical team who are taking care of Brandon and  provided me with a phone charging cable and a water line during his colonoscopy

At this day and age, when everything is out to get you, this kind of gory story would be all over the media. Unless this is a home gym and all involved are keeping it down low.

It doesn’t seem anyone involved is keeping it on the down low.

I am Brandon's stepfather. He has a habit of concocting these tall tales.

Brandon, if you read this, you are grounded for two weeks. I thought we talked about this. You promised me you would stop these fantastical stories.

(not really his stepfather)

I thought it was 2021. That account was started in 2019. Hardly new.

Thank you all for the well wishes and sympathies, offers of help and support, the good and bad humor, the conversation, discussion of factors, accusations of trolling, and everything in between. It is all greatly appreciated and I wouldn’t expect any less. If I wasn’t  prepared for all the places this thread could go, I wouldn’t have posted. It’s all good.

I am fortunate to have work right now with decent benefits, but the many offers of help extended speaks measures about the strength of the climbing community when it gets real, and I will do my part to help others in need.

Facts wise, I don’t know any more than I did when I originally posted. I will be trying to get additional details, and will update here along with submitting to ANAC.

I guess it is not all over the news because I’m a rock climber, not someone at a climbing gym birthday party. I didn’t call the news and I don’t use social media outside MP. I also survived, which does decease the newsworthiness.

Huge thanks to the first responders that helped me. Rushing into a traumatic scene like that to render aid is as rad as it gets. I will be taking steps to be able to do the same when on the other side of a situation like this.

I DM’d you SinRopa, trying to avoid terrorizing unsuspecting forum searchers looking for a gym and ending up here.

Kara is my sister. I sent her the link to loop her in on the details, not expecting her to post. Tom who posted earlier is my brother-in-law and primary climbing partner.
