Lovers leap conditions?
Thinking about trying to go in a week or so, wondering about snow level. Anyone been recently? |
http://www.newtoreno.com/ca-us50-webcams-twin-bridges.htm people are ticking stuff. i think it's reasonable to expect snow on the approach/descent for the main formation. hogsback is probably drier. |
Did Haystack after work today. Approach is fine, if a bit wet. Temperatures are pretty nice once the wall is in the sun, wind was rough. Definitely a fair share of wet patches and cracks, but not too terrible. Did a lot of post holing coming off the top. |
There is still a good amount of snow around the base and summit. The parking/campground will not be open for a good month or so either. Except for post-holing walking off the east wall or main wall. Give it a couple of weeks with the current weather the approach and descent will be much better. |

bump, curious if anyone has been up more recently and what the camping situation may be like |

It's looking a lot cleaner on the top when I drove by yesterday, definitely melting out quickly, though you've still got a fair bit of snow to go through on the descent (looks like way less depth on the postholes though). I haven't climbed there in two weeks, but Lover's Leap Guides did their first guided day on East Wall with (I think) Bear's Reach, Scimitar, Haystack and one other route sometime last week, so I would guess conditions have improved significantly since I was up there. For Instagram users, Lover's Leap Guides posts conditions of the leap, Phantom Spires, and Sugarloaf pretty consistently on their story, which is how I normally judge when to start going back there. Pretty sure the campground is still closed, but that information is definitely two weeks out of date. It's dry enough at low elevations that the Forest Service land closer to Sugarloaf should be fine to use for camping. |

From 50 the Leap still looked pretty snowy on Saturday morning. We opted to keep driving and check out Phantom Spires for the first time and other than being terribly windy, the weather was great, conditions were perfect, and the other climbers there (a dozen or so) were very friendly :) Camping on the road leading up to the spires would have been great. We camped at the Echo Lake Snow Park, which had some snow, but easily found some flat dirt to pitch a tent on. |

Here's a view from the top of Hogsback a couple days ago. Incidentally, you don't need to be an Instagram user to see the Lovers Leap Guide updates - just go to their website loversleap.net and scroll down a bit to see the Instagram feed. |

Currently at the top of bears reach. Approach to east wall is totally dry. Campground is still closed :/ |
There is still a little snow coming down from Corrugation Corner/Travellers. The campground will probably be closed for at least another couple of weeks. Please Do Not park on Strawberry Ct. (The road leading to the campground/day-use area). |
