Anyone into Sewing?

Just fixed this TNF Base Camp Duffel with my singer heavy duty 4432. The patches are 500d cordura. The stitches aren't super straight because my machine was never designed to work with such heavy fabrics, but it's definitely functional. I just threw 2-3 lines of stitching for every 1 line on the original bag to make up for a much smaller diameter thread.

So the fabric I have is Serge Ferrari  Satin  502. Basically a 16 oz reinforced pvc  with a Polyvinylidene Fluoride varnish (Related to teflon) on the outside.  So should make easy to haul bags.

Check out local awning companies. I see the North Face used it for some giant geodesic dome in the alps for a winter festival.

I'm so pale I can get a sunburn from a full moon, so I made this neck/face shade.  The fabric is nothing fancy, just an old cotton t-shirt.  When one of my nice UPV long-sleeve shirts gets worn out I'll probably switch to that which will be lighter and more breathable.  The snaps are mounted permanently to the helmet.

Here’s a new down jacket: approximately 7.4 ounces, 4.1 of which is 800fp down. Hand warmer pockets and one interior chest pocket. Shell and lining are Membrane 10d nylon. I haven’t decided about hood or collar.  More pictures here

A pattern assisted 40L pack i just finished up. Made from 5oz dyneema composite, and 210 hdpe gridstop. I wanted something identical to an HMG pack, but cheaper.

Some of my finished projects... got a few etriers in the works and a set of backpack straps for a rolled raft.

Those are the longest ladders i’ve ever seen. Nice work on them! Do you actually find that many steps beneficial?

Thanks!  They look long in this picture... they’re about 7’ but no.  Haha I just made the first one with 2 more steps than I meant to, so I just made the second to match.  They’re a tad heavy too, I’m looking at lighter methods of a spreader bar inside the top step.

I don’t remember anything too frustrating.  I might have had a little more trouble than normal with unwanted folds of the bottom fabric sneaking into the seam while sewing. And the holes left in the fabric after unpicking a seam look huge!    A bit of massaging seems to close the holes pretty well.

Lots of interesting details in your pack:

Are those snaps in the roll top webbing?

Is that a draw cord closure for the top of the mesh back pocket?

Clever to incorporate lifters into the shoulder strap webbing. I’ve never sewn load lifters onto a pack: do you think they help and are you happy with them?  Does this pack have any kind of frame sheet?

I would not buy an overnight pack without load lifters. But I'm weak. YMMV.

No load lifters is one main reason I don't own a Hyperlite, otherwise I'd love to give them money.

Here’s the pattern. stitchbackgear.com/patterns…

They are snaps! A little unecessary, but they make the opening roll down a little cleaner. The side compression cord is one piece that runs through the channel on the front mesh pocket. So when you cinch the sides, it also cinches the pocket.
I have mixed opinions on load lifters. The only time i’ve personally felt them necessary is on my haul bag when it’s loaded with 50+ lbs. I haven’t actually loaded this pack yet and hiked, so we’ll see. They were easy to add on.

It does have a foam frame sheet, with an option for plastic. Behind the removable pocket is a velcro flap that holds the sheet in placeere’s more pics

Finished this guy today, not specific to climbing, but you could really use it to carry anything.

Cool. Is that an IK or a packraft rolled up in there?

It’s actually a 9’ raft.  It’s the Hyside mini-me.  I haven’t tested out the set up with my 12’ Otter yet.  A 100 lb raft might be pushing the limit of practicality.

Just finished up this set of etriers for a buddy, first attempt at this style.  My work on them isn’t perfect but they’re passable.

A frame bag i made for my gravel bike recently. A bit overkill on the material, but it’s bombproof. X50 mulitcam xpac

Working on a set of 72” daisies, first one done and I’m decently happy with it. My bar tacks are getting more consistently 8/9 out of 10, but there still tends to be one or two on everything I make that look a bit uneven.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
