So he denies knowing what they were, even though he posted this in March...

This is unbelievable. Richard Gilbert does an "FA" of a 5.3 chosspile and drills bolts literally on-top of thousand year-old rock art, enthusiastically posts it on MP, then when people ask WTF he says its just graffiti and not rock art because the letter "H" did not exist in Native American languages. He has since deleted this post. Mr. Gilbert is now being investigated by the BLM and NPS for resource destruction and vandalism, and hopefully will be banned for life from Arches National Park. If you're reading this Richard, you really suck man.

Where did you find he was being investigated?

At this point the routes are no longer visible on MP

Deleted comment about Arches NP ...

Regarding the initial comment about the letter H. It is gone (along with the routes) but not the initial history:

Social media helping criminals convict themselves since 1998.

I removed the routes on the petroglyph slab.  I think I should remove that whole area - any objections before I do?

I'd like to echo someone in the other thread who pointed out that it may be better to leave the area up with a description of what happened and why others shouldn't climb here.

I think i'll get in touch with the LCO and talk over what to do.

For clarity, the routes are not in Arches NP.

This is outrageous and unacceptable at every level imaginable. As climbers we CAN and WILL do better.

I would love to get involved with removing these routes in-person if possible if it has not already been done. Please reach out if I can get involved in any way.

Hey all, I think there will be a knee jerk reaction to get out there and fix it from some of the locals. Please don't, let the investigation run its course and the land managers take appropriate action to finalize the bolt removal. We don't need to make any more of a mess that has already happened.

I hear you Sam, we need to wait for the investigation and compliance to be done. Likely review by an archeologist, LEO, and natural resources specialist (if they bolted a petro panel they probably did a bunch of other natural resources damage as well). This stuff takes time with a wildly understaffed office.

I absolutely agree! :) According to the FB thread it seems like these routes have already been removed. I sure hope whatever due-process needs to happen with this sort of thing can take place soon. Props to this thread for keeping a civil discourse instead of arguing about WWII like the other thread in /general climbing. It's easy to get riled up about these sort of things.

You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about Andy and you’re just trying to dog pile, which is fine but the least you could do is not make stuff up.

Maybe things like this should be dealt with within the climbing community in the future? Getting a government agency to start an investigation sounds like we'll see some new climbing restrictions put in place. Remember tensleep?

Richard, you are an idiot. The best thing for you is jail time. With a huge fine.
