Anyone near Madison have a copy of "An Ice Climbers Guide to Michigan's Upper Peninsula" that I could buy or borrow for the weekend?

Decided on a last minute trip for some end-of-season ice on the UP. It will be my first time going up there for ice and I've read that the guidebook is a must. If anyone near Madison would be willing to let me buy their copy or just borrow it for the weekend, please let me know! |

In case you don't get your hands on a guidebook, Down Wind Sports has a location in Munising that sells the book and the staff will also have good beta on what is still in. Thing are winding down a bit for the season (supposed to be 50F this weekend) and pretty much all the waterfalls have returned to their liquid form but some of the shady seeps are still hanging on. I'm always an advocate for getting the actual guidebook, but Mtn Project is pretty good for this area as well: https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105886705/munising and has GPS coordinates which are quite useful as the snow and ice recedes. You may want to consult the latest conditions report from the News page on the ice fest website as well. Happy climbing :) |

Angela Limbachwrote: Thanks for the beta, unfortunate that they haven't updated the conditions in 10 days. But I'll take my chances. Dodge and Wyalusing were still well in less than two weeks ago so I am feeling optimistic! |

Buy the book! 1/3 of the profits (like $.38 or something...) goes to my next climbing trip! ;) |

Jake Starrwrote: Jake, the conditions were updated a day or two ago. However, most of the true pillars are gone, anything high volume is gone. I paddled yesterday and could pretty much see from Intersection falls to miners. The only thing that "might" be there to some extent still is Midnight Rambler (there was white going from top to bottom, but no idea the quality). The curtains, lakeshore curtains, other small climbs between lakeshore curtains and SMM are still there. If you are adventurous, I suspect you would find some low volume, north facing climbs in the chapel/grand portal areas. Below is a pic of SMM from this AM. It is completely open with big crack at top. |

Curtains were still in though fairly drippy. The climb about 200 feet to climber’s left of curtains was also in, I happened across it by accident when walking back down. The ice to the left of Miner’s Falls was also still in as of this afternoon (and provided you have a moderately capable vehicle you can drive all the way down to the parking lot now). |
