March 11, 2021 - Wet rock in Red Rock - Weekly Report
|
|
Hello all, Weekly wet rock thread for Red Rock. Some reports I have on the ground: -03/10/21 - Light sprinkling of rain. Probably not enough to keep you from climbing a route in the sun on Saturday (if it doesn't rain till then) -UPDATE: 03/12/21 - RED ROCK IS GETTING DUMPED ON. RED ROCK IS CLOSED FOR THE WEEKEND!!! If anyone would like to add their datapoints, please do. wetrockpolice.com is showing no rain since Feb, but that there could have been rain in some areas. I believe wetrockpolice.com gets their data from this NOAA station. https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=36.1356&lon=-115.4268#.YEp3PmhKgdV |

Was scouting (hiking) in oak creek canyon yesterday and it snowed for hours, with medium waterfalls developing. It seemed to precipitate everywhere in the scenic loop+calico. It also just rained and snowed at the gun club 1 hour ago. Pavement is even wet all over vegas. I'm not a local, but this report seems a bit optimistic. |

There was fairly widespread rain (some of it heavy) across the area today, including Red Rock. |

Raining a bunch up in summerlin right now and it's expected to rain basically the rest of the day. No chance at climbing sandstone this weekend. Monday might even be too early for some areas. |

We hiked out to Black Velvet Canyon last night to see how wet it was, and while it wasn't dumped on, it certainly isn't climbable today. I doubt Sunday either, but the boulders weren't terrible, so it might warrant another look tonight to see. Either way, we are hitting the limestone today to see how it is holding up, and cursing our luck in the hotel room. Good luck folks. |

Water absorbs in, the surface looks dry, but its wet inside, the trapped moisture eventually leaves, and then the bonds reform. Now, when its cold out there (snow) and not much sun, this process is even slower. |

W Kwrote: Yes, only the overhanging stuff is wet. When everything else is soaked, CITH is a dry island in a sea of wetness. Makes sense, huh? |

I’m not anticipating getting on sandstone until Tuesday. I come here often to climb and many times the weather makes me think of that Byron Katie book “Loving what is”. But then, I’m not huddling in a tent or bivvied in a cheap hotel room. Sympathies sincerely to the weekend warriors who thought they were going to climb at Red Rock this weekend. |
