figured this would be the right forum to approach van lifers about this. What’s your experience been with this tech? Worth it? Which models work best? What are the limitations you’ve found?
Not for vanlife, but I've used them for work and they definitely do what they advertise. If you're not spending at least a few hundred (amplifier, external antenna), you're probably not going to get much of a change in performance. One thing to keep in mind is while you can add antenna/amplifier gain other factors can still prevent you from connecting:
* Line of sight - If you can't 'see' the receiving cell tower (or get some sort of bounce off mountains) you won't be able to connect * Background Noise - Generally shouldn't be an issue in rural environments * Gain vs distance - Adding gain (measured in dB which is a log scale) adds linearly, but adding distance is an squared relationship. So to add 2x the distance, you need 4x the power (and for 4x distance, you need 16x power, etc...)
