Ill be climbing in SOAZ 3/1-3/7; was hoping to check out some routes up at reef of the rocks. Anyone know if that elevation is accessible and if so is it in descent climbing condition or too cold? Hoping to check some of those mega looking lines!-> Crankbugs and Redtide

Also if anyone is interested or in need of a partner Ill be running solo. I give a solid catch and typically carry many good munchies.

cheers! ;)

Hi Zach, it will probably be pretty unpleasant up there but depends on your cold tolerance and desire for "sendy" conditions. Conditions are usually perfect at the reef if it's ~100 in town. I imagine most locals will be climbing @ windy point in the shade this time of year (see Beaver Wall, Gallery, New Wave and Honker for bolted climbs in your grade range).

Also, the approach got torched in the fire this year and it's probably better to give the soils on the ridge time to recover. If you do decide to brave it, both get morning sun.

The forest service has that area closed off until may as far as I know. Even if not I do know the locals, myself included have been giving that area some space. It unfortunate as Crankbugs is an awesome climb and my draws are still on it due to inability to retrieve them since the fire.

Thanks for the response Elle! Is the FS closure due to the fire or other land degradation?

Just read your response, Jon. thank you for the clarification. I’ll plan to stick to those other crags. Thanks y’all!

The FS closure is from the fire. However, it is only for forest service trails so the reef isn't officially closed. However, both the FS and the local climbing organization (CASA) are asking users to minimize travel in the burn scar (which the reef is in). I recommend saving the reef for your next trip to Tucson.

Will do, much appreciated Jon!

Also if you or anyone are lookin g for a partner I’ll be in the area 3/4-3/7
