Hey all... there is a very prominent rock sitting not too far up the 2 in the western San Gabriels that I'd always been curious about. Its located south-west of the Clear Creek ranger station (Josephine peak trailhead), and very close to and just SW to Cedar Overlook. Cedar Overlook itself is marked on google maps and has a (steep) unmaintained trail leading to it. The rock is very obvious from the pullouts on the 2 that are just south of George's Gap, and is clear from satellite views.
I had always been curious about this rock and figured it had to have been climbed before, or at least scoped out given its prominence. I also vaguely remember seeing a forum post about this either on MP or some other website, but I haven't been able to dig it up again and find it. So I decided to try and bushwhack my way there earlier today to check it out. Getting to the rock from Cedar Overlook is a pain: loose, thorny, bushy, steep.... Much of the rock itself is garbage, but the largest feature has some good rock on it (particularly the N side) and is about 60 ft or so (maybe?). After walking around it I found there is a single bolted line on it. Bolts themselves look fairly new too (still got some shine on them).
I can't imagine anyone goes out there often. It wasn't fun hiking, even without carrying any climbing gear. But I'd love to hear from people if they know the history of this particular feature and any details about the route itself. I took a few pics if people are interested.
Post the pictures if you’re down. I flew a little drone over to that a few years ago and decided I didn’t want to make the hike but I’ve still always been curious about it.
Looking down at it (from Cedar or just after, dont remember)
After most of the scrambling down. Good rock is on the far side of the large feature on left
Looking up at the only route I saw. First three bolts are pretty obvious. 2 more are somewhat visibly. If there’s more after that probably only 2-3 more.
Edit: Actually, looks like the photo res isn't as good on here as on my phone. First 2 bolts should be obvious. Third has a bail biner on it (can still kinda make it out). Rest are hard to see.
