Which is the better bouldering spot? I know both are great but I wanted to hear some more opinions before making a decision. Planning on a week long trip on March.

I am an beginner/intermediate climber(v7-8 in the gym)  and prefer overhang climbing, although I am not opposed to slab climbing.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks

Thanks!

Bishop! It has more variety as well as way more to offer. The buttermilk country is amazing, and the volcanic tablelands are as well. Also, if you climb in the gym a ton, you would probably perform better in the happies and sads than j tree

Also bishop is way more concentrated, buttermilk’s main has 500 problems within 10 mins of each other, happies has hundreds of climbs in the same canyon

No contest.  Bishop.

Joshua tree is mostly just for complaining about kitty litter, grades being wonky, and chasing people away that want to "share" your campsite.

Thanks for the replies so far! Bishop is on the radar. Now to find an area(s) within!

Definitely Bishop over J-Tree; it is a vastly better bouldering destination on basically every metric. Better rock, more varied, higher density of problems, convenient town amenities, etc.

Within Bishop, you don't have to choose two much yet regarding specific areas within Bishop. I'd recommend that you camp at the central area near town (The Pit), or stay in town, and then commute out to the bouldering areas each day. The major areas are within 15 minutes drive of town, so this is easy. As a first-time visitor you will likely be most interested in the Buttermilks and the Happies. These are the most popular areas, easiest access, best density of problems, etc. The other major areas (Druids, Sads, Catacombs, etc) are also good, but there is so much to do at the Buttermilks and the Happies that I'd suggest you focus in on just those two areas and not get spread too thin. Those two zones could keep you busy for years.

Regarding the Buttermilks vs the Happies: You'll definitely want to visit both to get the proper Bishop experience, but which one you spend more time at will depend on personal preference.  I'd suggest that for your first two days in Bishop, spend one day at each area to get a sense for what each one is like, and then use this information to determine how to spend the rest of the week. You could choose one or the other to focus on, or continue to split your time evenly. You should have a great trip either way. And March weather is generally quite good.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
