New and Experienced Climbers Over 50 Rendezvous 2021

12/17/2020 Update! Reservations made for both June and September! JUNE is largely book your own site, but some sites are booked that can be shared. June 26-July 3 Idaho Bob reserved 33 and 35 (I'll paste in dates shortly) June 28-July 7 I reserved site 34 for anyone who wants to use it, hopefully sharing. Bob is willing to help you sort who is where, but don't assume anything for June unless you reserve it yourself, or speak to Bob about 33, 34, and 35. I reserved my own site up the road for the June trip. It only has room for one vehicle, so that's me. SEPTEMBER 12-21 I grabbed the Breadloaves Group site. 12-25 people, including recreational vehicles. ------------- Okay, here's a thread for this. Cut and paste of my post to start it off. I've heard from a number of you, on and offline both. People lean both directions, June/September, Breadloaves/Twin Sisters, no surprise. I have my own leanings, but short version? Both. :-) IF it works out when reservations open in December, I'd like to again host us in June. Breadloaves, just to be different, and for the climbing right there. I wanna climb with you people!! I have no desire to sort who would owe how much, and the money is a real burden for some (but not for me). I think I'd like to just pass the hat once we're there, and we can hand a gift to the park directly. ZERO obligation. September, I'd suggest we do the same as the first trip. Someone nab the group camp in January (yes, way early), if it is Twin Sisters, individuals can hop on and snag those four individual sites too, if that seems a good idea. I'll be over there heaps anyway, that's my "home crag", and my climbing partner and I are both unemployed and unencumbered. Best, Helen |

I/we are interested and have never climbed in the City |

Does mtn project have a way to do polls? Options that people can vote for resulting in a bar graph or tally could easily track preference for June v. Sept., Twin Sisters v. Breadloaves. Talkbass.com has this feature, for example. Would be nice to have here |

From other thread so it is here: I vote June, Breadloaves. And live band! |
|

I'll be there in both June and September. In June, around Summer Solstice. September, after Labor Day. I'll post my exact dates after reservations open. Jay has a great idea, live band. |

Depending on life events I’ll be there. Do the breadloaves sites have trailer access (14 ft camper)? If not I can try to reserve Smoky Mtn or the other RV park for the dates. That worked well last time, but it did mean I didn’t really get to meet most of you. |

A few photos Breadloaves: Group camp/breadloaves parking Breadloaves area. Group camp is not atop the rock, sorry guys. Screenshots from maps. These give you an idea of the layout. All that rock is the breadloaves climbing. The two picnic tables and fire rings on the left side of the dirt are two walkin sites. The group camp is the area between the parking and the rock. Small trailers should be able to just turn around, easily. "Back in" if you want, with no particular spot you'd need to be in. Tents, are just pitched wherever you want. I don't remember if there's more than one firepit, but there's plenty of picnic tables. People do climb at the breadloaves all the time, so it could be busy. Both a plus and minus of the group camp. Twin Sisters: Group site Group and site 1-4 The four individual sites. That white car is parked where it's illegal to be overnight, lol! Red car is site three, site four is on the same side of the parking, tucked against the rock. One and two are the little trails on the right. Parking for 1-4 is that turnaround, the elbow where the trail to one is, and the wide spot off the main road. Best, Helen |

I just might be up for this! |

I won't vote but I would love to go in June assuming this C-19 think is in the rearview :) |

OLH, have you heard from (most of) the folks that attended the Sept. 2020 get together? Seems there's been only about half a dozen replies to the when and where question. |

I've also heard from some people offline. Got some friends who "check up" on me now and then, much appreciated when it's just me and cats! Useless little hooligans can't even make coffee. Sheesh. I expect a few things will happen as time moves along. As December 10 gets close, more talk on here. No one can really commit to anything, for sure, so it will sort whenever a date is near. I'll be at City a bunch, assuming nothing unfortunate happens. The rendezvous idea lets people have an opportunity to meet each other, or meet up again, visit a great climbing locale, and, well, just have something to look forward to. In my case, a trip to City with you peeps will be the climbing trip I didn't get in September. That would mean a lot to me, to at least be able to spend more time with people. And climb. That was still the best place I could have been last year. For myself? Same, but I can also shoot over to meet anyone who wants to get together with me whenever it is feasible. My fastest "let's go!" trip was forty minutes! Not City, but two nights minimum. It's only November, and I'm already itching to go! My guess is my first trip will be well before June. So? Knowing me, as with most things climbing and especially MP? I'll solicit input, and eventually just make a decision, lol! Probably depends on what's available in December, honestly. And, if anyone else has their own ideas and/or wants to take point on a get together, that's up to them, of course. City is just the one that's super easy, for me. Travel in the time of plague is the tough part, for many. Even gathering as a group is pretty manageable, or it seemed fine for everyone in September. Going long distance.... But thanks for priming the pot, Jay! At some point, maybe I'll try to copy/paste some of the replies from our other over fifty thread? Or just wait. I dunno. Best, Helen |

When 2021 City of Rocks reservation system open on December 10, I'm going to reserve two (2) campsites near the Flaming Rock trailhead. I'll post the site numbers when known. Arrival date June 15, departure date June 27. Hoping to get sites that will accept small (teardrop) type trailers plus 2 tents. Should provide space for 4-8 climbers. Flaming Rock provides walking access to many climbing routes and there is usually cell phone signal on top of one of the rock formations at the campsite area. |

Idaho Bobwrote: Well. This is another option, too... And might be how it goes anyway. So. Maybe September is fine...maybe it isn't. Booking individual campsites, adjacent to each other, is definitely also a good way to go. That's what we did for the start of the 2020 September trip, after all. Four sites, sharing parking with each other, meeting (or not) as everyone wished. Opinions? Here's another screenshot, of the campsite map. I've not camped at the lowest numbers, just from about Window arch on up. Best, Helen EDIT and a link to the camping page with the map and info. Scroll around and click map. https://www.reserveamerica.com/explore/city-of-rocks-national-reserve/ID/315044/campsites 23-32 is the cluster of campsites around the Flaming Rock trailhead. |

I'll suggest wait and see - should reservation of a group site not be possible, discuss and go from there. |
|

I'd lean toward September and Breadloaves or Flaming Rock. It's hard to know what my availability will be like, hopefully I'll still be unemployed, or hopefully I'll be employed by then ;-) |

We're only about a week out from 2021 reservations opening up. Anyone interested in taking this over? I don't know if I'm up for it, honestly. Going, yes...probably. Putting it together? Probably not, or at least not right now. H. |

I'll make campsite reservations for September at the Breadloaves group site. That site can accommodate at least 4 trailers and 10 tents. Maximum number of campers is 25. Climbing right outside your tent! My suggestion would be arrive September 12/depart September 19 (7 nights) OR arrive September 19/depart September 26. I'd appreciate feedback if any potential attendees have a timing presence. I'm also making reservations for June, arrive June 15/depart June 27 (12 nights). I hope to get site 33 (good for trailers) and site 35 good for tents. Within walking distance of Flaming Rock trailhead. There two sites will be OK for 6-8 climbers. Again, I'd appreciate feedback if anyone is interested in June. BTW, first day of downhill skiing today. Not as much fun as climbing, but it was a bluebird day and uncrowded. |

Hey Bob, I can say with some certainty that I'll be coming for the June get-together. This is dependent on the pandemic cooling off to some extent and that my wife and I can get vaccinated by that time. We will be staying at Smokey Mt. campground but hope to be able to hang with you and your friends a lot of the time. |
|
|
Thanks for stepping up Bob. I'd pick later in Sept in hopes that it's not hot. I hope to be there in June, and if so, might not be there in Sept. |
|
|
Well, I am hopeful for both June and September - depends on Covid, vaccinations for June and job responsibilities for September. Thanks for taking this on! Helen - hope everything is ok - let’s touch base next week? |
