* I'm 66 and right now my elbows burn when I pick up a box. Exercise, pressure point bands, and PT are providing only modest improvement.

* I don't have a regular partner and frankly I'm semi-terrified of finding one thanks to the number of threads/comments that so casually ask about or refer to the number of times they've been dropped by belayers. I learned to climb in the early 70's - that shit happened maybe once in 5-10 years and was considered a major outlier. Now some seem to think it's considered a part of climbing. (And for those of you who think it normal, a special comment: fuck you.)

When you finally understand the quip: It would be a great route except for all that climbing.

I can think of many reasons why some people would stop.

Real talk: Do MTB'ers or climbers talk about gear more?

Do you think climbers spend a lot of time talking about gear? Seems like beginners with some experience are usually focused more on gear than those who have been climbing a while and just want to get after it.

It's usually what to take and what to leave behind with my partners, or specific applications for certain equipment and pleading our respective cases. If they want to bring stuff we don't need (which is fine!) I make it clear I'm not going to use or hump it.

Having spanned both worlds extensively I can tell you that climbers geek way harder on your gear because it's usually safety related, while with MTB it's all vanity and all they know about their gear is the price and how much it weighs.

Well, MTBers talk about gears more than climbers

When I Can’t

  1. When I can’t adventure climb, turn to easy sport.
  2. When I can’t easy sport, turn to scrambles.
  3. When I can’t scramble, turn to hiking.
  4. When I can’t hike, turn to crawling.
  5. When I can’t crawl, try to just slip my legs over the side of the bed to sit up.
  6. When I can’t slip my legs over the side of the bed, ....

Burning out from the expectations of an outdoor scene that these days is in many senses, but not always, driven by ego and others having to prove themselves? Antidote: remembering that we do this for fun

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
