Securing A Rope on Small Pack

Hello,

Just wondering what the best way to secure (or coil) a rope to a small pack that has a rope carrying strap on the top but no compression straps. I really do not want the rope ends dangling around.

Thanks!

Just tie it into a small tight circular coil.

Swiss or New England coil (I've heard both names for the same coil).

Edit: Or use a mountaineer's coil. If you uncoil it properly, you won't get twists.

I use a Patagonia Linked 18L pack, and it has a strap on top for the rope. I butterfly coil with fairly short coils (use slightly bent arms). You then make three successively short coils, loop the rope around the middle, tuck the end in the shortest coil, and then cinch the coils tight. If you strap it on the pack, the coils stay put fairly well.

Or: lap coil slightly longer coils, finish as you would normally, drape over top of your pack, so cinched section is behind your neck, now take coils hanging on your right side and feed them forward, through the gap created by your pack’s shoulder strap where it connects to the bottom of your pack’s body—-so now the coils are threaded forwarded, under your arm, then tighten your shoulder strap slightly. Repeat on left side!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
