Franck Veewrote: What's the "clear downside," considering you used the full word in your post? (kind of surprising you did that) Aren't you providing the same advertising? |

FrankPSwrote: Nuances? Heard of them? |

Franck Veewrote: I thought the use of that word was verboten, regardless of the context. I also thought common practice/etiquette was to just say "the N-word." Anyway, different strokes for different folks (I just made that up, but you may use it). |

As one who can easily be accused of over posting sometimes, there are also sometimes when I figure I should just STFU till I know what’s going on. This was a clear case where “asses” and “umptions” were best avoided. |

Marco thanks for sharing this. I coach the local youth climbing team and we try to meet up every other Friday to climb at that exact spot. It would have been devastating to come across it with a group of kids and their parents. It's an unfortunate reminder of how much more work we need to do as a community. |

Kellen Millerwrote: Climbers against Rap. News at Eleven. !!!! Please spray your outrage at the millions of black people using the word as we speak. Otherwise, please, no more imaginary outrage in chalk. I'd rather the focus be on racists such as yourself. Black people don't use that word. There is a slang version that they do use, but nobody here expects you to understand subtleties or anything that requires imagination, so I won't pretend you'll understand that argument and spare you the word count. Reading is hard, after all. |

T Legowrote: Racist. No I am just not going to complain about chalkers. Graffiti is one thing. Chalk you can brush it off. Black People don't use that word. Yes they do. Over and over again they use it. Try not to whitewash anything on my account. But if you insist on calling me a racist. I will insist you are ignorant. |

Marco Cornacchionewrote: Irregardless of what happened or didn’t, racism isn’t acceptable in today’s climbing community. Regardless of what happened or didn’t, irregardless is NOT a word. |

Kellen Millerwrote: Glad to know it doesn't affect you, but we kind of already guessed that. I'll accept my ignorance, but I can still recognize some forms of racism, especially the blatant forms that seem to be popping up here recently. I, like you, am fortunate enough to benefit from a society where I am not the victim of racism. I implore to show empathy for those who are. I'd love to see your argument to a southerner that y'all or you'uns means the same thing as "you all". Pronunciation and intent mean quite a bit, as they do with the more offensive word being discussed. If you don't see that, then I guess we are both ignorant. |

Roger Schimmelwrote: Now included in the non-standard dictionary. I don't really approve of using irregardless, but language also changes over time: Hopefully people's attitudes can also change over time as well so we can get beyond the issues illuminated in this thread. |

T Legowrote: okay i'm not sure why it even matters, because the word is offensive and shouldn't be used either way, but you're wrong. My teammates, some who are African american and many who are from Kenya, use it all the time. Full pronunciation (mostly the kenyans, and they use it jokingly). Again however, it doesn't even matter and also you shouldn't be calling that dude a racist because he made a subjectively racially insensitive remark. Hobbyjogger. |

If you are keeping up the fight to keep the n-word as an acceptable thing to say or display to people that you know may not be comfortable with it, you are picking the side of doing potential harm to your fellow man. Again, I implore you to think beyond this childish bragging, and consider others with less privilege than yourself. |
