N-word scrawled in chalk at base of climb near Fraser, CO

I am calling you out!  You are a climber, or at least associated with climbers.  You used a block or chunk of chalk to write the N word at the base of a completely obscure crag in the Fraser Valley, sometime between 7/5 and today, 7/9.  You're also a coward, thinking no one would be there anytime soon or that no one would care.  You're wrong.  I care and I'll bet the overwhelming majority of worldwide climbers do too.  If you're reading this, reflect on the warped reasons you'd do this.  If you know the person who did this, ask yourself why you didn't say something and also talk to this person about their awful choice.  Whatever the reason, it's wrong.
To those reading this, here is a brief description of what happened:
Sunday 7/5 I climbed at Hurd Creek Lower wall with my two boys.  There were at least 7 other people there.  We all got rained out around 1PM
Thursday, 7/9 I went back to rope solo/TR at the same crag.  Near the base of Batch It, I saw the N-word in chalk.  I was the only person at the crag.  I looked and looked at it, saying to myself it must be something else.  But it was undoubtedly the N word.  I took a pictures, but am not posting them because this word needs to be gone from our world.  I washed and scrubbed it off with water.

That's disgusting and I'm sorry you or anyone else had to experience it.

This is awful and completely unacceptable. It's also important that you posted it here so people know it's a problem in our climbing community.

What's your point? "Look, there are racist people out there"?

You joined MP just to post this?

Edit: I don't believe this story.  Even if a photo were posted, I would think it's staged. Not because I don't believe racism exists, but because this doesn't smell right (new user, troll agitator)

So what? There’s A racist. There’s a racist out there. Writing bad words in chalk. Spooky! Brush it off and move on, you’re not a hero.

I believe his point is that over and over again we hear that the outdoor community is ‘color blind’ or as I’ve seen in other threads, victims of ‘reverse racism,’ yet here is a real life, current example of someone in our community who is blatantly and cruelly racist.

I believe your definition of “blatantly and cruelly” racist might be a little off. Is this like, Hitler levels of racism? Does this climber own slaves? Does he beat up black people with his rack of cams wherever he sees them?

Or could this just be some immature douche eliciting a reaction?

If this is a troll, you're doing an excellent job at outing all of the "get over it" turds that litter MP. Bravo if trolling, thank you for raising awareness if this real.

This^^ We repeatedly hear from the same old tired responders that racism in the outdoor community isn’t real. Now, when offered a real example, the attitude is blow it off...or it’s just words...it’s just being done to elicit a reaction...at least it’s not physical violence.

STFU, it’s unacceptable whatever the reason. Even if it doesn’t rise to the level of an actual lynching, it is language and attitude that has no place in our society. It it‘s this very language and attitude that allows further, more serious transgressions to occur.

Even if this is a troll, the response is shitty.

The problem with your logic is that I could choose numerous words and phrases from your own post which are offensive and should have “no place in our society.” It’s a sliding scale. If anything, if I see you writing the n word into the side of a cliff, you make it very easy for me to choose to not associate with you.

Mob rule is great until the mob turns on you.

Bold (and quite lame) of a troll to use the real name of a well known longtime climber.

Are the people with the private doubts the ones that are on here yelling that 'it never happened' or that this is a troll, Dave?

This seems a bit more credible than the Jussie Smollett hoax. A bit. That one was full of holes right from the start. This one's not much better.

We are being asked to believe that...

Someone snuck into a climbing area with a chunk of chalk and picked out a particular completely obscure crag on which to randomly write an ethnic slur, completely out of any racial context. Just that word. Not some insult to go with that word. No declaration of anything else. Just picked that one word, hiked all the way in there to do it. They did it on a day when others were there and somehow threaded the needle of the timeline, did their evil, and vanished without a trace. And OP is either a well known climber and guidebook author who strangely never had an account here, or a troll using his name. Yet won't post even an edited photo of the evidence because racism to do so, nor even the washed off remnant.

Nope. Not there. Sad if true, but seems pretty unlikely to me. This is an improbable, non-actionable and fruitless attempt at shaming someone who would be immune to shame, if they exist at all. Seems like race-baiting to me, not a credible story.

Something is fishy here.  I'm not saying you're making this up...but I kind of am saying that exactly.

I've just talked with a couple, one of whom is non-white, who arrived early AM and left late-afternoon on 7/9.  They also say they were the only ones there, were on Batch It, and didn't see (or write) anything.  So either our racist perpetrator came and wrote it and hurried away after they left, and then you showed up, and somehow no one crossed paths...or this story is fabricated.

Also, are you claiming you're the author of the Indian Creek guidebook, or just using the same name?  Seems strange you weren't on MP until yesterday.

If I've called you out and I'm wrong, I'll admit it.  Feel free to PM me with the timeline about when this all happened and we can sort it all out.

Why doesn't your Amazon link work?

You must be an agitating troll.

For real. This forum begins to be a lot easier to navigate with a third of the posters blocked. It's almost as if they don't understand that it's not essential to post in every thread...
