Taking my in-laws climbing. San Diego

Title says it all. They’re in pretty good shape so the approach is less of a concern. I have a rack and rope so anchors are not a problem.
I’m more concerned with the style of climbing, ideally I’d like to take them to a route that’s tall enough to be worth their time and simple enough that they aren’t hanging every move but not so easy that they can solo it.

Yes, I’ve been using the search feature but many of the easier routes seem too short or way too easy to be worth dragging them out.

Any suggestions would be helpful! I’m not familiar with the area as much as I’d like and would love to learn more

What part of Southern California are you in?

If you’re in SD and don’t want to add significant driving time as an additional factor, I’d imagine Mission Gorge is going to best suit your needs.

Sorry probably should’ve specified that we’re in San Diego near mission gorge as a matter of fact.

Thank you for the input! I’ve only been to mission gorge once but found the rock nerve rackingly slick. Perhaps it’s time for a visit

Depending on how much you hate them, the crucible at Mt. Woodson is an option

Brutal approach but El Cajon mountain is way better climbing than the gorge

Is the gorge allowing climbing again? I’ve been having to go up to mount Woodson and summer mornings at the gorge are way more my style.

Called the visitor center yesterday and the recorded message said climbing is currently not allowed.

Agreed, but I’d caution that this isn’t really the season to climb at ECM (imo), unless they’re *those* kind of in-laws.

This week seems an especially hot time to try that.

FYI,
Just checked a message left on MTRP phone # I called, it said climbing is still prohibited. WTF!!! when are they going to open this place up for climbing?

Mission Gorge is open to climbing.  Per statement by Mission Gorge Ranger.  For some weeks now.   They just don't want big groups or guiding.   The phone recording is wrong.

Was going to say I’ve been there 3 times in the last two weeks haha hardly anyone there climbing right now! Get out there and climb! Note that many people don’t wear masks on the trails if that concerns you definitely wear a mask.

It’s all part of “The new Normal” silly. The Government, through their spokespeople, can open a campground, a road, a place and not tell the person- working from home- to update a recording.
Call the Kernville Ranger you get a different answer then the one the Porterville office gives you. I can understand some of the confusion- communication is hard these days you know, as is the sharing of information.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
