Questions about how flagged posts being hidden will work

Alex Swrote: I enjoy reading posts from internet trolls and those they butthurt for entertainment value.

will there be an option to all to show all flagged posts?

^^^This is the nature of the problem here when it comes to trolls. They get fed and their supporters feed them too.

Providing "troll entertainment" is the antithesis of the inclusion, promotion of diversity and the sharing of experiences and information that is really the only benefit of the forum and should be the soul of the operation.

"Troll entertainment" is precisely why this forum has so few with real experience posting here. For better or worse SuperTopo had the real legends and pioneers posting and in that sense was an immeasurable resource of experience and history.

I would imagine such a feature rollout would benefit from having a period where  users that are flagged be informed that their posts have been flagged and which posts were flagged. At least give those who are on the gruff side of "I speak the truth as I see it" a chance to tone it down if they'd like.

Absolutely no warning will be given, I just had my ten year old account deleted after a post that had15 likes, was dead serious, and was about legitimate access issues that concern this site in particular. I was never aware of a post being flagged pre REI or post REI.  I suppose I was censored because I had the audacity to criticize Mountain Project and it's impact to access issues. Nick's goal is to sell ads. If a route I bolted gets photoed by a rando, posted on MP, and is used to sell ads, hell that's ca[pitalism. But when Nick won't allow a discussion of how that particular situation jeopardizes access to that particular crag and instead deactivates an account, the situation is deteriorating fast.

How long will he allow a criticism against his management stand? In my experience, not long

As I explained to you in the personal email I sent you, your account was flagged many, many times by many users, and quite a few of your posts were inappropriate and were deleted by me and other admins in the past.  I don't care an iota about your criticisms of me or MP, but I do care about about keeping the forums civil.

BTW, there hasn't been an ad on MP for 6 years now and we have none planned.

I know I've been flagged a bit, but have had relatively few posts pulled over the years.

I assume I've been flagged but I'm not sure how I would know. I'm not sure if I'd had posts deleted by admins though, is there a notification that goes to the user if that happens?

Poor wording on my part. I meant "know" only in the sense that some folks here really dislike my posts, so I'd be shocked if I wasn't flagged.

No, there's no notification (although there should be*). I've only known I've had a post deleted when I saw the "violated guideline #1" replacement in a post of mine in a thread I'm following.

*: In Facebook groups, when an admin removes a post, you get a notification about it and you can click on that to see the reason.

Do people seriously not know who Nick is?

Apparently not. Nor who the Karen people are.

I've had whole conversations disappear, in the past. Wild eyed old lady, lol! The covid thread got locked too. Not sure why, the same stuff just migrated out of that thread and into other threads. That discussion, early on, was a good way for people to thrash through this thing, IMO.

I would just ask, please Nick, don't disappear stuff or users. The "rule number one" box is sufficient. Personally, that's too far, for me, but I'll talk to people. There is very little hateful just to be hateful on here. Usually it's just someone getting heated up and pissed off. I like that discussions can involve people with wide differences of opinion. I also assume there's maybe a libation or three involved now and then...

Why would there be consensus? It’s his website!

Poor guy, he liberates us from the REI overlords and then some trolls and jerks come in and make it miserable for him!

Keep up the good work, Nick.  Always appreciate the good stuff on this site and the availability to the masses.

Am I a troll, or a jerk? Do I have to pick? Or can I aspire to both?

Yeah, thanks Nick. You guys still owe me a t-shirt for don't remember why from way back when...

Thanks for coming back, Nick! I brought you five beers (minus a small handling fee.)

I don't and that's why I have asked the question. Lots of things have happened recently that have made the user experience worse and I'm honestly just trying to figure out if this is going to be an ongoing issue

Gee, you could maybe open Nick Wilder's profile? Founding father is a bit of a clue. ;-)

Delineate what you think needs work, and make good suggestions. It's changed a lot in the time I've been on here, and that's only five years.

After a couple days of usage, I’m not a fan of the auto-hidden posts. Let people manually hide those they find obnoxious; that’s a good compromise. Worthwhile posts are being stuffed. And also, people flag Frank just because he’s a political conservative and can’t tolerate his views, despite the fact that he has good climbing experience to share.

it's confusing but franks post was hidden because it quoted a hidden users post.

You said we would receive a warning or some sort of information so as to know what is and or isn't appropriate so we could adjust our behavior. You did not do that for me, and I know dang well what personal relationships of yours drove you to act in such a way.

Too be clear this is the response that was so offensive my account was deactivated.

Your emotional reaction is causing you to miss the point, as emotional reactions tend to do. The point is that experienced climbers should be better than noobs, not just at climbing, but at leaving as little trace as possible, at being courteous at the crag, safety, etc. Not all experienced climbers are, I know, but it's not difficult to be better than the inexperienced at this, and so most are.  Just giving a noob a road map to the crag and then wondering why there are surface duces all over the place is something that directly impacts climbing access negatively, and is a is something Mountain Project shares at least a little bit of culpability in. Sorry if your feelings were hurt before, climbing 5.8 can be a touchy subject I guess. Looks like it struck a major MP nerve there, lol.

So, I call BS Nick. I am not this offensive character you describe, but I am critical of your site and the way it impacts my environment. Your site is predicated on the work of thousands of climbers investing millions of hours of hard work, and to censor the voices of these contributors because they are critical of your service is despicable.

So wait, you were telling Nick that Mt-Proj. bears responsibility for people shitting at crags?   For real?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
