Slim, Don’t worry I went straight from Wuhan to Moab in early January. So they’ve already had it for a few months anyway.  I’m still in Vegas until May. The funny thing is my job has been deemed essential and we’re working 80 hour work weeks

True.
But the Spring Breakers especially in Florida are the ones who possibly will help in the spread of Covid.
Talk about irresponsibility.

Lets face it.
Politicians are assholes.

But if there’s one language every politician speaks its money.
We’re talking Silicon Valley on “shelter in Place” orders from the assholes.
Is NYC there yet?
The Canadian border closed to non-essential travel.

In WA bars and restaurants are closed except for take out.
There are tons of examples of this all around us.
All of these assholes will have to answer for their actions because if nothing else it’s costing everyone money.
Maybe these assholes aren’t full of shit?
I mean Donald Trump is considering GIVING money to people.
We all know sensationalism happens in reporting but reporting isn’t always sensationalism.

that florida beach shit is just plain stupid but clearing people out of forest service and BLM land is also stupid. Its the ultimate American fantasy to escape the city and  head into the wilderness to eascape and ride out the storm. Now we will waste resources to patrol the back country with gunned up rangers to shatter that dream....   Merika......

hey nick - i certainly understand these are trying times, but we're nowhere near "grab your shotgun and get your kids in the basement" level yet. for many of us, we are still going to work, taking the kids to daycare and trying to get through the best we can (with obvious adjustments of course). i can't say i see any of this behavior out here...(aside from the TP hoarders)

Here's an idea don't live in a city. Move to the mountains or wherever your favorite climbing spot is and then call yourself a local so people can't tell you not to go to their town when there's a crisis. No longer "the ultimate American fantasy" but reality

Steph  that's what all the flatlanders did to VT, Now its almost suburbia. and if you want to see hostility the Killington Locals facebook page which as near as I can tell is dominated by flatlanders who recently moved here is absolutely bristeling with  hate twords the weekenders still coming up here or bailing from NYC  which is on partial lockdown , natnl guard etc.  despite the fact that those weekenders have season leases on their condos that they paied big bucks for.    Curt. the gunstores are absolutely mobbed. Ammo is as scarce as Tp and hand sanitizer right now.  check this out www.sgammo.com

Locals are just trying to keep the rock to themselves.  Don't listen to them.

Inyo County (Sierra east side) has done the same; they have a tagline, "Your adventure can wait."  The Truckee Chamber of Commerce (no, really!) is also discouraging visitors. The health system in small communities is easily overrun and exhausted. We had five new cases of COVID-19 in Truckee today.

Places like Bishop and Moab are going to be decimated by this.  I hear Bishop locals almost reveling in the fact that out of towers are now unwelcome but I think that needs to be tempered and remember that towns like that are almost 100% reliant on out of town dollar.  Many businesses will be wiped out for good.  That coffee shop you love to hang out in will be gone, gear shop gone, local eateries gone.    Many “locals” will end up moving back to the big cities that they are bad mouthing now.

Interesting. I ended up cancelling my plans to go to Zion and Bryce next week. It’ll have to wait.

A lot of climbers who’ve been sent home from their employment are using this as an opportunity to visit climbing destinations.  The problem is that if Covid-19 blows up in Bishop or other small towns, the EMS capacity to deal with the resulting patients would be quickly overwhelmed. There are few hospital beds and ventilators, and the capacity to transfer patients to Reno and Southern California is limited.  Bishop locals are acutely aware of the economic importance of tourist dollars to the region, so this situation presents the local authorities with some real hard decisions. The bottom line is that it’s irresponsible to be traveling unnecessarily right now, and the small town destinations aren’t going to be able to respond well to a Covid-19 outbreak. The actions taken in the Moab area to limit the number of visitors are drastic, but the authorities apparently felt the public health threat merited drastic action. Depending on how things play out in the near future, I wouldn’t be surprised to see similar action taken in the Eastern Sierra. Time will tell.

The issue is that places like Bishop, Moab, New Paltz and North Conway (and others) have shit medical facilities for large scale events.

Someone had to get rescued today off Mt Washington (what happens if they are carrying and spread to the rescuers and hospital staff if they went?) that now mean 10-20 people are more likely to be carrying in a area with 10,000 people? If 10 people are infected and spread to 10 each, that essentially infects the entire population prett quickly. All because someone had to flail down a mountain?
I’m all for doing what you want, but if you get hurt or lost in the outdoors right now,  no one should respond to you.
I’m all for volunteering to help people in need, but there is a influx of tourists and they are putting people at more risk than they think. If you really wanna climb go climb in your congested city with top rated Hospitals.

Yeah.
It's a catch 22
But what's more important staying secluded and maybe losing your business, or have people coming from all over
and taking the chance of losing your life. That's how it got here in the first place, whether people coming home from overseas infected, or tourists coming into the US
that were infected.
All the Casinos here in Vegas are shut down and a lot of the businesses except essential services are starting to close.
The WHOLE country is going to be suffering from this pandemic, and we all got to hunker down in place unless absolutely necessary
until there is a better handle on the situation.

But, I guess It really doesn't matter where you go and who you might come in contact with if you are not in the age bracket
that this virus kills mostly.
Just like the spring breakers in Florida.

I live in a part of the world where the mega-wealthy have their bolt-holes. The private jets have been coming and going over the last couple of days. These guys are completely self sustained (think gold-plated doomsday preppers), so have no impact on the locals ability to manage the virus.

I will likely do my weekend solo ventures but will be self sufficient.  full tank and my own food. drive to the whites or smuggs , solo and drive home. pee in the woods.  I usually buy from local stores (intentional) while  going to and coming back from those adventures but will bring my own food now. I free solo but am very conservative so never getting rescued /recovered anyways. Haters gonna hate.    The only issue I have with the city folks coming up here is that they are not self contained and end up at the grocery store in line with everyone else yet the ones from NY city escaped a lockdown...

yup, fully self-sufficient with gasoline made in the middle-east and food purchased at the grocery store...

nobody ever plans to get rescued... remember, IF you get hurt, you potentially take a hospital bed from a sick person... just food for thought

we are getting a little silly here, no? Do you not buy and consume grocery store groceries if you stay in town and your dwelling?  Do you grow and raise all of your food?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
