The Summit chain of climbing gyms in the general Dallas-Fort Worth area announced last night that they will be closed at least through the end of March.
It's pretty easy to keep "social distance" in a huge national park, plus I rarely climb the clogged classics anymore. Don't usually touch my face either with all that bird shit around.
Philadelphia Rock Gyms and Go Vertical in Radnor, PA are closing for two weeks.
I for one, am quite heartened by the general response with gyms and outdoor retailers with the resources to do so (REI, Patagonia, etc.) closing their businesses, and still paying their employees. People are putting people first. People are calmly and diligently following the advice of public health experts. People aren’t as divided as our politics would make it seem.
People aren’t panicking in the real world (If you think people buying extra rolls of TP counts of hysteria, get real. I saw a society collapse in Iraq in 2003 - we’re nowhere even close).
The trolls can shitpost all they want but they don’t have any real power, and very few are taking their viewpoints seriously.
You're right! Just because they've been wrong in the past, and over hyped past diseases, this time it's different and worthy of panic! Are you scared????
Yeah Frank, have these people been wrong before? Just trust them because observation and your own judgement can't help you here! Just use common sense! The meaner I am, the more you'll believe me!
2001: Anthrax is going to kill us! 2002: West Nile Virus is going to kill us! 2004: SARS is going to kill us! 2006: E. Coli is going to kill us! 2008: Avian bird flu is going to kill us! 2010: Swine flu is going to kill us! 2012: MERS is going to kill us! 2014: Ebola is going kill us! 2015: Measles is going to kill us! 2016: Zika is going to kill us! 2018: Ebola again is going to kill us! 2020: Coronavirus is going to kill us!
Officially back in this thread...dangit.
We are as dissapointed as you that you are back in this thread... dangit. Don't take it out on yourself. You think these infections magically took care of themselves? Who was wrong, the scientists and doctors for mounting a response? You could say the same thing about defence. What the hell do we need all of these planes and bombs for...? Read.

Dear Chicken Little,
Everything will be OK. This will blow over in a couple of months. Hard to believe, huh? My crystal ball says so, so I know it's true.
James is providing a calm perspective and he is welcome in this thread. (I can't wait for the responses to this!)
Edit: I just went to the grocery store, and other people were there, too. Amazing!
People are most defiantly buying up all the TP and panicking at leasti California Central Valley.
Again, people buying extra TP isn’t indicative of mass panic and hysteria. And neither are the social distancing measures being implemented.
A lot of people have grown up in time of, by dint of luck, in wealthy and largely peaceful nations, and aren’t used to inconvenience, sacrifice, and the need for collective action. What they didn’t realize that the tribulations that have always plagued humanity (disease, natural disasters, war, etc. ) were never defeated - they were always present, just waiting to reappear. But fear not, live well, and help flatten the curve.

Calm, yes, the exclamation points were very soothing. Please do nothing, and this will blow over all by itself. No one shoud have to work hard to try to control an outbeak.

Be like Frank and just go with the outbreak, see where it takes you. It’s not a seizure, he has a hunch. Just lay him down in the recovery position and wait for the wisdom to spring forth.
James, it is obvious that you, Gumby and others refuse to read and understand math and basic logic. And given your previous comments about infectious disease experts being alarmist, i'm not sure Jon's comment is uncalled for.
I was at a gym last week, which I won't name, that later notified me via phone and email that somebody at this gym tested positive for the virus the same day that I was there..... It included a letter from the department of health in that state indicating the risk level was low and to self-monitor for symptoms.
I am not too concerned since I was in a different part of the gym as this person, but obviously there is still a chance of exposure from restrooms, public spaces, etc. This gym as temporarily closed due to safety concerns. I think this is a good policy for sure for the time being.
But I know it's contagious. That's why NASCAR closed down. It's so contagious it can spread car to car. And don't even get me started on the dangers of playing golf outdoors! I can totally see why the commissioners of those sports shut down and didn't even bother continuing with their TV rights. It's not like all the excessive closing will hurt the economy. We can't afford anything on TV right other than C-o-r-o-n-a-v-I-r-u-s! And have you seen how close those news anchors sit next to one another! Social Distancing please!

Gumby the Younger wrote: Hate to say it but Frank is right, it will blow over, this aint The Stand more like Grapes of Wrath, it seems a good way to distract folks from other issues like I dunno the stock market crashing or current election. I know its soft conspiracy theory but the numbers of sick, grievously, or dying don't call for the panicked response. measured yes, enough to change routines, habits etc. again yes.
@Marc801 C, death is a part of life, running from it scared won't change the eventual outcome.
Frank is dead wrong. His ignorance is seeping out of my computer screen.
I tell you what, if I get another pt dying in my ICU when I go back to work on Thursday I'll give you a call. Then you and Frank can come and explain to the grieving family why their father, grandfather, brother is dead. That its just a part of life. That yes, his only fault was being 75 and had smoked in his earlier life.
Life must be real easy when you have the insight, depth and compassion that you and Frank and that jack ass from Rado driving to Moab are displaying on these threads.
You can't even just hunker down for 2 weeks for the better of society.
And psst- the stock market is crashing because of the virus and the feds panicking and the poor leadership in the US. If you're going to make conspiracy theories at least have them make some sort of sense.
Pretty sure NYC just forced the gyms' hands. On the lookout for a response from all of the gyms soon. Interesting seeing Ohio doing it of their own accord though.
