I used Mountain Project data to train a neural network to generate climbing route names. I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Holy crap. AI really is the future.

"Throbbing God" is a personal favorite haha

Considering unsupervised AI's well documented streak towards racism, I can't imagine how this could possibly go wrong.

This is amazing
Throbbing God is also magnificent.

I’m a SQL jockey, but an ML/AI neophyte. Would be so stoked to see a detailed procedural walkthrough/explainer on how you got this done, if you ever have the time and inclination.

On a less hilarious / AI-related note, I’m dreaming of the day I get the chance to put up a decent route that is mostly a heinous approach followed by plentiful type 2 terrain leading to a stunning vista. I’m gonna call it Eudaimonia.

This is amazing!

  • Mr. Ripley and the Pescatarian Vegetarian Beliefs

I think 2000 was the right number. Enough to make some of them weird some of them poetic and some of them normal. But not enough to make the AI racist as someone up thread mentioned. And not quite enough to piss off the snowflakes in the misogyny in climbing thread off. But close!
Do you have a full list of what names it generated I'd be interested to see it. I'd climb
 Aquatic Vibration System
But it sounds like it would be out of my grade range.

dm me your email address and I'll send you the full list. It's pretty amusing in its own right.

Check out the Max Woolf link in the article. It gives a good overview of what's going on. He and Neil Shepperd have written packages that make retraining GPT-2 incredibly easy. All you have to do is get the training data - which is super easy thanks to the MP API - and tune the learning rate and number of steps.

If you google "generate text with recurrent neural networks" you should be able to find plenty of blogs. The github for Keras has an example of doing so with Nietzsche's writings.

Well documented misanthropy.

Stop it with the gaslighting.

Was just brainstorming this with a retired school teacher, an ER tech, and an electrical engineer at NTM East Quarry the other day.

Seems better served in a separate thread, but all jokes aside, I’d love to explore the notion of the “perfect” lead rope soloing system. A spiritual successor to the Silent Partner (what’s with the story with the discontinuation there, anyways?) would be cool - if a bit not entirely necessary.
p.s. join us in the “Favorite Top Rope Solo Device” active thread.

Since a real Hugh Mon will select these names from the list, the ultimate responsibility for editing will be on them.

Would be fun to play “Route Name Turing Test”.

Random assorted list of route names. X% are composed by a human, Y% are composed by AI.

human-composed set e.g.:
  • “Empire of the Fenceless”
  • “59 Inch Drillbitch“

A.i.-composed set e.g.:
  •  “Throbbing God”
  • “Poop a Tuna“ (jesus i love this one, and want it to be a route that is essentially the same moves as the “Changing Corners” pitch, only, over water)

Human participant has to guess which are which.

Next-level-fun would be if photos/route descriptions were included.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
