Crews searching for missing hiker at Red Rock Canyon - Rainbow Trail
I was hiking juniper canyon this afternoon and they were flying all around rainbow mountain for a good while, including one really low and slow pass through the canyon with the door open. I didn't know the story at the time. Hope the guy is alright. |
Search suspended yesterday. Resuming today. Hoping they find the guy alive. 33 year old with a "health condition" who called his wife and sounded panicked saying he was lost. |
Type 1 diabetic, unknown if he was carrying insulin |
Curious what they mean by rainbow trail? Rainbow wall from oak creek? Rainbow Peak? Both? All of the rainbow peaks have exposure where a slip could be dangerous/fatal and no official “trail.” |
Still havent found him. Here are some additional SAR interviews and info. Hope they find the guy alive. I got stuck up there a few weeks ago and had to emergency bivvy. It was quite cold. |

Leo Derosa wrote: Type 1 diabetic, unknown if he was carrying insulin Insulin would have the effect of LOWERING blood sugar. A T1D would normally bring BOTH insulin ( to prevent hyperglycemia - high blood sugar) AND sugar ( to prevent dangerous low blood sugar ). Giving a T1 Diabetic while they're extremely low or passed out from low blood sugar would certainly kill them. PSA: DO NOT ADMINISTER INSULIN. |

"Sounding confused" is a symptom of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Depending on how active he was throughout the day, and how much he was eating, he may or may not have enough reserved energy to bounce back... though the window in which that can happen is measured in hours, not days. I'm not an endocrinologist, but I'm pretty sure that transferring to ketosis for energy takes longer than it takes for brain damage to start -- if he is even able to in the first place. |

That's awesome that a local helicopter company volunteered to fly out. That can't be cheap. Hope he is found and safe. |

It will take about a week, give or take for an average person to get into ketosis. This will very depending on their general carb intake and fitness level. |

While the article mentions a local heli comany, the Las Vegas Metro PD SAR is fully funded by their police budget and is most likely the ones that will take charge. The helicopter pilots train in the canyons and are very skilled at it. |

I was on Browstone Wall today and watched both Sheriff and other choppers making sweeps through Juniper canyon. Also saw a SAR team of four scrambling down the gully zone between cloud tower and rainbow wall. Looks like an incredibly thorough operation. Hoping for the best. |
