SHELF WINTER

Looking for a reliable partner who is not afraid of the long drive to get some outdoor sport this winter.  I like getting there early, leaving mid-afternoon.  I lead 5.8 to 5.9 right now but tend to move up in grade as I climb more.  Willing to follow harder.  Please let me know.  A few weekends I'll be mountaineering or ice climbing but if you are a good partner, I'll focus on rock.

What’s up Liv? I’m stoked to drive out to shelf with you and clip bolts all winter! My work schedule varies week to week so just contact me and we can make down day trips happen!

Mostly focused on skiing in winter,  but hoping to do a trip or two to Shelf or Turkey Rocks. Please keep me in the loop.

Sounds like you have enough interested that you could announce a Shelf trip here and others would join.

Hey Natalie!  Long time no talk to - I have a feeling these days you are climbing a lot harder than I am.  Good to know.  I'll hit you up.

I'm around this week to climb. Anyone want to get some pitches in 12/24 or 12/26?

Just a little heads up on Little Brown Bats hibernating at Shelf. Male bats will hibernate alone. When they hibernate, they are susceptible to attack from raccoons, owls, and other predators.

We found one such injured bat yesterday. Some other animal had bitten his butt and it was raw. He was trying to rest in between some rocks on the ground at Bank Robber wall. We managed to give him some water on the end of a dried fuzz covered stick, which transferred single droplets pretty well. He drank about ten drops and then I moved him near a deep crack in the main wall he could easily crawl into if he wanted. I wore gloves and he bared his little teeth. I picked up the entire rock he was on and he clung to it. He was able to crawl around once agitated, so we have hopes he will survive. We applied a small amount of antibiotic ointment to his wound. I'm going back today to check on him. If he's still there, I'll take him to a wildlife rehabber. (Update: He was gone when I visited, hopefully into the crack behind him.)

As you can see in the picture, we left a cap filled with water for him. A bat infected with rabies will not drink water, incidentally. Late stage rabies instills an intense fear of water.

If anyone is going down to shelf either 12/30 or 12/31, I'd love to join. I'm looking to lead 5.8-5.9, hangdog or follow up some 5.10s.  I am visiting family in South Metro Denver. I don't currently have access to a car and would be in need of a pickup. I am also willing to stay closer for sport climbing in the Denver area as well. Feel free to PM me if this interests you.

Hey Tim, let the guys over at climbers for bat conservation know. They just want to help National Forest and Fish and Game survey animals, they won’t get  climbing shut down or anything.
