Best way to decorate a crash pad?

I recently snagged a cheap Mad Rock Mad Pad on Craigslist and want to do something simple (yet durable) to break up the plain black surface.
Other people have had to have done this... I’ve thought maybe a Sharpie/permanent marker or maybe paint? Tips, comments, suggestions?

Not very durable but this would be cool

You can buy material now that looks and feels like real grass. Apparently many in high rises are using it as carpet in their apt.

Saw the article in some magazine. Many different types of grass as well.

Pelts harvested from off-leash dogs are stylish and functional.

Don't forget controversial.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
