What are your climbing goals for 2020?

Hi MP

Do you have any climbing related goals for 2020?

How has your 2019 climbing year been? Did you meet your goals from last year?

2019
Wanted to climb v5 outdoors consistently
-Ended up doing a handful of v5s and even got a v6. It was all in one area that I spammed for months; got to spread out the pyramid and climb on different rock going forward.

Wanted to start top roping and leading
-Bouldered for the first half of the year and have been slowly getting into this. Did a bunch in the gym, happy with that. Not too bad on the falling, basic single pitch systems make some sense. Need to get used to big whips and ways to avoid them with a partner 60 pounds lighter than me.

Wanted to try training tools and maybe use them to shore up weaknesses
-Ended up using a hangboard quite regularly. I really like the idea and practice of progressive overload, so I've been doing max hangs going up in weight by a single pound per week via a pulley system. Very slow but very linear progress so far, went from 170 total weight hung on a trango rock prodigy medium edge half crimp, to a 210 total weight on the same edge. Started training the 3 finger drag in a similar fashion recently.

2020
-I want to get outdoors more than 50 days this year
-I want to do a top rope, lead, and a multi pitch follow (and lead?) this year.
-I want to climb several local projects that I have not been able to do the past year.
-I don't want to get injured.
-I hope to go on an extended climbing trip

Pretty abstract goals for the coming year, but I've been enjoying trying a bunch of new stuff. Not sure what to shoot for grade wise, but a wide pyramid of excellent climbs that are hard for myself sounds really nice.

How about you, MP? Doing anything special in 2020?

Lead 5.12 on a sport route, 5.11 on a trad route, and get comfortable with leading multi pitch and building anchors.

How about you just go have fun and let the rest go by.

Short version is to take my wife up North Ridge of Table Rock next fall, but there are several intermediate steps, such as . . .
- getting lead certified at my local gym and getting comfortable on the sharp end of the rope again
- lead lots of easy sport routes outdoors
- rebuilding trad rack (starting with having my 15 year-old cams re-slung)
- getting plugged in to local (Southeast) climbing community and finding other people (in the geezer/trad dad set) to climb with/learn from

Primary objective: To not get injured. All other goals should fall in line if that one is met.

Same as it's been for awhile now.

Just don't leave a trail of body parts behind when I walk across the room...and now, don't forget where you set the artificial bits down.

Other than that? Have fun, be safe, be awesome. Order is variable. To accomplish that? Keep my mantra in mind:

Put pants on, show up. Best if you do the pants first, but hey, you do you, eh?

Best, Helen

Have fun. Climb. Don't fuck up and die. Repeat.

1. Walk with my whole foot, heel walking sucks
2. Climb with my toe again (heels are terrible at vertical edging)
3. Regain some of the strength I lost from skipping climbing days due to pain, and now, due to immobility

4. 2019 was the first year since I climbed 5.12 (2004) that I didn't climb at least that. I'd like to correct that moving forward.

I didn’t meet my 2019 goal, which was to hit 100 days total in the Black since I started climbing in 2012. I’m at 84 right now.

It was a pretty good year though: I got 51,835 vertical feet outdoors over the course of 95 climbing days, and that was with taking two months off.

2020 goals:
- Lead solo Scenic Cruise
Astro Dog, Southern Arete and Cheap Hooker
- Moonlight Buttress free

Wanted to climb more, ended up climbing slightly less, but not bad for a trad dad in the Midwest.  Will try again next year.  Also, would like to get to the Creek when it's NOT fucking wet so I can actually climb.

Continue to develop the new area up the road. This year has been a kid in the candy store year, and there's much more candy just laying around.

Rehab my injury and climb again, with current friends and new ones. Have an amazing year of tournament poker that equates in more Redrocks climbing. Be like water. Learn and share .
