Stop Making Movies About White Guys Doing Cool Shit: The Sequel

(Shoutout Marcelo. I made a really foolish point [page 7] and then I learned why I was wrong, look at that.) I learned how much people haven't faced white privilege. I've also learned that the people who have reached out to me individually are way easier to talk to. It's nothing new but forums are super tough for good conversation. You say one thing to thousands of people who can just tear it up. I do it too. We all do. But when you get a one on one conversation you can really avoid a lot of the nonsense. So thanks to the people who I have talked to one on one. Both through here and Instagram. I also learned that people who disagree with you will Google your name and then post quotes from your work bio here which is super bizarre. haha. |

Too bad people take it too seriously. Glad you learned, you took the hardest L in this thread. Maybe re consider how much you should steer this conversation. There are a lot of ignorant people in this thread you seem willing to learn and grow, to an extent - maybe unclench a bit as as well. |

I don’t understand the difference between slam dunk contest videos being dominated by black athletes and climbing videos being dominated by “x”athlete. |

Is there a separate thread on the “Dyno Article”? Because that one is really INSANE! |

If you live in the Western states with sunshine you live diversity. That's odd. I was thinking the opposite but I grew up in western ski towns. I don't think I know a single African American. I don't even know if I can call them that. Both of my friends have blonde hair. Yet nearly every time I have been back east I ended up having a decent convo with non-whites. |

Can we get a few more white people in here talking about White People in the third person? |

Robert Hernandez wrote: Word and you are right. I’ll chill. You all should read Kai’s post about this on her thread, he said it better than me anyway and he’s darker so apparently it’s a better source. I would like to read Kai's response, could you give URL? |

What's with the begging not to be hated? |

not sure if this thread was an hour of my life wasted and unrecoverable, or had some interesting and thoughtful moments. |

Robert Hernandez wrote: I will allow myself to censored by white privilege just this once. Thanks mp police. Oh MP, I think it says a ton that the GOC (gentleman of color) gets censored speaking his truth on a subject of diversity. Yeah, people love citing studies and spouting their opinions unless the talk gets real. I thought climbers were supposed to be a tough bunch? Weak sauce MP admins! |

Instead of posting sour grapes on a blog, perhaps the author should go out and actually make the awesome movies she wants to see. |

Until main stream climbing movies check the age-ism and size-ism they perpetuate no one is truly free. |

The criticism I've seen has centered around this statement on the Kickstarter page: This isn’t a film about gender imbalance or the sexualization of women or what it’s like to have your period at the crag. This is a film about 5 of the best climbers in the world doing what they do best: crushing. Personally, I'm pretty psyched to see the film and don't mind that they chose to focus on hard climbing and not to foreground gender/sex-specific issues. But I can also understand the disappointment at the fact that they felt the need to make this disclaimer on their funding page--as though a film that did focus on these things would be less worthwhile. Why would I be less interested in a woman talking about how gender expectations affected her climbing than I was in hearing how Tommy's divorce affected his, or less interested in a woman talking about her period than Cedar talking about climbing with a messed up ankle? |
