Stop Making Movies About White Guys Doing Cool Shit: The Sequel

I mean, no. But I genuinely learned a few things:

I learned a pretty complex nuanced point about self-deprecating humor from POC which was cool. (Shoutout Marcelo. I made a really foolish point [page 7] and then I learned why I was wrong, look at that.)

I learned how much people haven't faced white privilege.

I've also learned that the people who have reached out to me individually are way easier to talk to. It's nothing new but forums are super tough for good conversation. You say one thing to thousands of people who can just tear it up. I do it too. We all do. But when you get a one on one conversation you can really avoid a lot of the nonsense. So thanks to the people who I have talked to one on one. Both through here and Instagram.

I also learned that people who disagree with you will Google your name and then post quotes from your work bio here which is super bizarre. haha.

Too bad people take it too seriously. Glad you learned, you took the hardest L in this thread. Maybe re consider how much you should steer this conversation. There are a lot of ignorant people in this thread you seem willing to learn and grow, to an extent - maybe unclench a bit as as well.

These threads are in no way indicative of anything other than what people with too much free time think to vomit onto a page.

When you decide to tell the world how to think and how to feel it's a losing proposition from the start. That's why I'm mostly making jokes and playing devils advocate, way easier than whitesplaining racism and systems of oppression, lol. Anyway, too bad people got so worked up about it they dug hard like that. Pretty fucked up, even tho I don't agree with all your talking points I dont mind the conversation.

You probably should have more brown friends, too. Come to San Diego where we are equally progressive and regressive. You can have latinx trans alpinist friends in Hillcrest and veterans with ptsd and problematic views of social hierarchies in Ramona, all at the same time!

I don’t understand the difference between slam dunk contest videos  being dominated by black athletes and climbing videos being dominated by “x”athlete.

Is there a separate thread on the “Dyno Article”?  Because that one is really INSANE!

If you live in the Western states with sunshine you live diversity.

That's odd. I was thinking the opposite but I grew up in western ski towns. I don't think I know a single African American. I don't even know if I can call them that. Both of my friends have blonde hair. Yet nearly every time I have been back east I ended up having a decent convo with non-whites.

I wonder if people would be upset if someone argued that the 8 white NBA players need more coverage.

Lol.  Personally I’d rather be getting paid the big bucks.  But I definitely agree!

Can we get a few more white people in here talking about White People in the third person?

Don't tell me what to do. This is oppression and I will write a blog about this.

I would like to read Kai's response, could you give URL?

I wanted to read it too and looked to see if it was on the author’s Instagram post—apparently the comment was made by a fake account that misspelled Kai’s last name:

not sure if this thread was an hour of my life wasted and unrecoverable, or had some interesting and thoughtful moments.

100% sure MP can’t solve racism with 12 or even 1000 pages

My worthless opinion:
Highly recommend watching:
-I am not your negro
-OJ Made in America
-13th
And Free Solo
(page 2 guy, I think you need another viewing, you must have missed something, or have never stood at the base of el cap)

Oh MP, I think it says a ton that the GOC (gentleman of color) gets censored speaking his truth on a subject of diversity.  Yeah, people love citing studies and spouting their opinions unless the talk gets real.  I thought climbers were supposed to be a tough bunch?  Weak sauce MP admins!

Instead of posting sour grapes on a blog, perhaps the author should go out and actually make the awesome movies she wants to see.

You must not know about the criticism this movie is getting from people like the author

Wait, really? Do tell. Isn’t this exactly what she was looking for? Is it because the title might be offensive?

It's because of what another person said upthread. There is no pleasing the unhappy inclusivity monster.

Until main stream climbing movies check the age-ism and size-ism they perpetuate no one is truly free.

The criticism I've seen has centered around this statement on the Kickstarter page:

This isn’t a film about gender imbalance or the sexualization of women or what it’s like to have your period at the crag. This is a film about 5 of the best climbers in the world doing what they do best: crushing.

Personally, I'm pretty psyched to see the film and don't mind that they chose to focus on hard climbing and not to foreground gender/sex-specific issues. But I can also understand the disappointment at the fact that they felt the need to make this disclaimer on their funding page--as though a film that did focus on these things would be less worthwhile. Why would I be less interested in a woman talking about how gender expectations affected her climbing than I was in hearing how Tommy's divorce affected his, or less interested in a woman talking about her period than Cedar talking about climbing with a messed up ankle?

I also think there's a prevalent mentality (far from limited to the climbing world) that holds that underrepresented folks should be grateful for any representation they get, and that any critiques people might bring up about efforts to include/highlight them is ungrateful whining. And I think it's worth reflecting on where this knee-jerk reaction comes from.

Sure, there's a point to the saying "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good." But at the same time, how are we going to do better if people don't speak up and offer constructive criticism when they see things that they view as flawed--even, or especially, when the objects of criticism are working towards a worthy goal?

(P.S. Most of the comments I've seen about the project have been positive, which also makes the focus here on the critical comments kind of interesting. Almost anything on the internet will receive a healthy mix of praise and critique--why should this be any different?)
